Lots of progress, in the last couple weeks. I got the seats in and the harness attached in a way that I'm happy with. There definitely isn't a whole lot of extra room in there so trying to get everything to fit was a little challenging. Just a couple more steps before I can try starting it up and see if I messed anything up during the rebuild. Next step is the wiring harness. I'm a little daunted by this, but I'm hoping that once I get started its going to be easier than expected. Also, I need to finalize the gas tank connections. I'm trying to figure out what I want to do about the charcoal canister. I'm debating re-using the old one vs looking for a small cheap one on Amazon vs building a custom one with directions from the interwebs.

Looks good. I assume the 1.6 in a 97 is due to an engine swap?
I am trying to figure out what I will do for charcoal canister as well when I get to that point. The 99 donor I have has 2 cans one near the motor that is fairly small like a soda can and a large rear box like can about the size of a shoebox. I may try and swap the front can to the rear to save weight and size and eliminate the front can all together. I plan to install both, get everything sorted then remove and test to avoid adding new problems to the build.

Not sure of the current CA DMV smog test requirements but I think your car will be required to meet the specs of your donor. I would keep the stock EVAPS system including the fuel filler neck and cap. Also make sure you mount the OBDII connector so that it is accessible.

Nope, car doesn't need to retain anything. It needs a PCV and that is it. They don't care about OBD, because it will be tested as a 1960. Here is what I did with mine:

Zeitgeist, what makes you think its a 1.6? As far as I know it's a 1.8. Granted I don't really know how to tell the difference, but I put all the parts from the FM rebuild kit for a 1.8 in it and it seemed to all fit.
Snowbird1, in CA there is the SB100 process which (if I understand it right) should allow me to get rid of a fair bit of the emissions stuff.

Here is what I did with mine: Thats exactly what I'm thinking! Couple questions: Where did you get the little charcoal canister, and whats the other even smaller one? Do you have a roll over valve in there somewhere? Which of those inlets on the left goes to the engine and which is the return? (Didn't take a picture before I tool it apart.)

I thought you may have had a bad motor and replaced it with a 1.6. Odd but if you had one on hand it wouldn't be that odd. Must just be a typo.

I bought a large box of canisters off ebay (various kinds) the part number for the one I used was PHB102320. The smaller one on the end was a left over I had from the Miata donor. My donor was a 99 so I didn't have a return line. The roll over valve is the one the vent is connected to.

I dig that seat belt mount. That fitment (stock on mine) has bothered me for some time now ... will look at incorporating what you've done in my big list of "over winter mods" !!

Forgive my ignorance, but where does the mount usually go and why is this more beneficial? Thanks in advance!
