I set mine up against the gaage door as best I could but I do believe the IVA man will let you adjust it when you come to do the test

I could not set up the headlights with any degree of accuracy in my garage. To be on the safe side, they were probably pointing at the nearside gutter. Mark (the IVA examiner at Southampton) accepted this, allowed me to loosen them off, and then held them in place while looking in his gismo while I tightened them up again. Thanks chaps, I've 'eyeballed' them about right :-)
I'm in the process of iva-proofing the car before I get some overtime in to buy the new wheels and apply for the test. I've just got a couple of questions/queries:
1. I've wired the hazard and fog light switch lights so they illuminate with the side lights and dash lights and the fog only comes on with main beam hi/lo (fed from pop up relay). Is this acceptable? 2. Heat shield for the fuel tank from the exhaust? Is this a requirement or will some shiny tape on the underside of the tank suffice? 3. I have the 'heat' warning light on the dash which I believe is caused by a knackered cat resistor. Leave the wire connected and take the lamp out of the dash or snip it?
Any advice would be much appreciated as I'm a iva test virgin so some daft questions may be coming out here soon....
Cheers

My thoughts would be
1. I think as long as your fog illuminates with the main and dipped and NOT side lights you will be fine as well as the switch itself illuminating. I have taken my power feed from the pop up lights as I think it was Trident who originally suggested that.
2. I do think it would be best to fit a drip shield however in this months Kitcar mag there is a small section on fuel tanks and no mention of a drip tray. Somebody on the IVA tips failed because he did not have one. Its a bit of a silly one because if fuel does leak onto a hot exhaust it wont go on fire unless there is a spark. I am in the same boat but I am going to remove my tank and fit one. See Nitrams build. I am not sure if some shiny tape stuck to the bottom of the tank will suffice
3. I think if this warning light is on it will fail. If like me you intend in just having the CAT present for IVA I might be tempted to do as you suggest. I would of thought getting another secondhand CAT would be easy and fairly cheap as another option.
Cheers Chris

Thanks Chris, credit to trident for using that as the switch feed.
I think there are quite a few issues that are dependant on your iva examiner, I guess it's luck of the draw. (I'm based in oxfordshire so I'm thinking Leighton Buzzard or Southampton)
I conveniently have another mx5 in my workshop (former daily, future slider) so I may just put that cat on as I know it's good. :-)
Is a centre rear view mirror required? As you'll see sod all out of it....

I used the MX5 centre mirror (upside down). Can't see much but meets IVA requirements,

Re. the fuel tank drip shield - when I get to that stage I was planning to have a look to see if there exists such a thing as fuel-proof flexible (rubbery) sheeting that could be used rather than metal sheet. If it was heat reflective that'd be a bonus. Just a thought.

Not much progress, Been doing loads of silly little iva proofing jobs. (Clips, wiring tidy ups etc) Fitted the wing mirrors, glad I went with the 'exo'/hatched theme for the various brackets across the car. Where are people putting the extra vin plate? I've made an aluminium strip with ''MEV LTD EXOCET VIN NUMBER' stamped on it. Does it need to be on the right hand side of the car?

I was thinking of riveting mine to the left side of the transmission tunnel. I am pretty much the same stage as you. Check Nitrams build he put his near the brake fluid reservoir

It's quite simple to cut a thin sheet of ally and PU it to the top of the subframe and the rear chassis rail... no tank removal required. 3. I pulled the bulb and clipped the wire because I fitted a high flow CAT that didn't have a heat sensor... no IVA issue. Make sure that you don't have any tiny leaks on the exhaust joints as they tend to suck in a little air and mess up the IVA emission readings. IMO it would be worth getting a local garage to run an exhaust gas check to see whether your CAT is blown, or if you have any leaks.
