You're right Geoff, I did and it was a 'mare!
I thought there would be about 100mm clearance but there was quite a bit less in the end. Even though I used the hole from the carbon canister pipes, thus removing the connector, there was still only about 50mm clearance I would guess.
If I get a chance at the weekend I'll whip the filler off and give it a measure for you. Bear in mind though that the tank is on an angle so, if you're looking at placing the filler neck in the back left corner, you may have quite a bit more clearance.

Hi Geoff,
I'm just getting started on my build and am scratching my head over what to do with the exhaust. I have a similar donor to what you've been using and was wandering how you modified yours to make it fit?
If you've got any more pictures of it being modified or installed I'd be grateful,
Thanks,

Chaps, if your having issues with the fuel filter, check on eBay for in line fuel filters. The fit into the fuel line just before and after the feeds and returns connect to the fuel rail. There cheap at a few quid each and are designed to be changed more often but are much smaller and don't need and fixing or supporting brackets as theyre super light. I'll take a few pictures over the weekend for you.

The cheap plastic filters are not rated for use on a high pressure fuel injection system though, if I understand correctly....?
Are you not meant to use metal or glass filters on fuel injected cars?

Plastic filters are only allowed if they are marked as suitable for high pressure fuel injection, the iva will fail if not stated, its best to stick with metal filter if poss. Stiggy does mention this in the build guide. Steve

Sorry chaps, poorly worded. I have the glass ones, they're a little more to buy than the plastic ones initially but are safer and IVA compliment. I meant the filters themselves are cheap at a few quid, and are pretty easy to replace. Not sure how many miles they'll do as theyre pretty much paper but it's somthing new. Also makes the engine bay look pretty cool too!

Alex, I'd be very interested in seeing photos of how you've fitted your filters. I've been a duffer and bought some rubbish plastic ones, it wasn't till they arrived that I realised just how bad they are.

I'll grab some pics at the weekend for you. Just as a heads up, when I IVA'd build one, he wasn't overly interested in anything other than the fuel hose. He didn't ask me to remove the rear grip either as its all assumed to be mx5 parts and therefore more than safe. The fuel filter isn't part of the IVA checks (from what I remember in the manual) but I guess if it's a crappy plastic one he may comment.

I still have the original fuel filter which appears to be in very good condition. Would you advise not using it? Sorry for crashing your thread Geoff

I used the standard (albeit renewed) standard fuel filter - it bolted on nicely to the mounting point on the front off-side corner of the fuel tank. No issues with clearance or connections so may be worth looking at.

It's one of those parts that's open to individual interpretation. I had a bit of a headache with the standard filter on build one so looked for other means, whilst others, (well, pretty much everyone else!) dealt with it without any problem. I'd been a bit silly and pre cut the fuel lines so had limited placement options. I also fancy a nice looking engine bay so went for in line ones this time round. It echoes what's been said many many times over - every build is different and unique!

Pretty much the same as mine! Got two, one for feed and one for return. Although now I've thought about it there isn't much point in filtering the return to the tank!

I would not run one of those glass filter on a high pressure system only on a carb setup in engine compartment.. filter unit doesn't look like much..it doesn't take much to mess up an injector.. wouldn't take the chance on a freak thing braking the glass leaving 50psi+ of gas coming out.. there are many metal units to choose from..
