I bought an engine with Mk2 1.8 87,000 miles on it (how to check I don't know!). The plan is to strip completely rebuild and fit in the car during the winter. Given the current situation I have found myself with plenty of time and have already stripped the engine completely!
It all appear in reasonable shape, apart from some scoring on all four of the pistons and cylinders. The scoring appears slight and I cannot feel it with my fingers, but I assume a rebore is require subject to the advice of the machinist when the reopen! and new pistons.
However when I look on line its very hard to find new pistons for 1.8 Mk2, the only ones I see are £650, which is really to much. Any ideas as to why? Lots of Mk1 options.
New Aero catch has arrived I will fit up this weekend and post some pics.

Will they hone out and fit new rings? that's something you could do yourself. Did you compression test the engine before removing? If its that bad get another engine perhaps? I fitted the new aero catches, unfortunately did not realize that I had bough flush mounting. The catch is fitted on the front top support bar above the radiator and not enough room to flush mount the catch. Also not that confident in my cutting accuracy. Together with the popper the front is quite stable with no wing wobbly and it seems to work well. If anyone want to trade flush mounting aero catches let me know
