Well.... went back to BAR today and passed! Wooooo Head to the DMV next week for what should be the final appointment. I'll do a write up after that.
Until then, has anybody tried an FRS / BRZ or even 350Z dual tip exhaust? I'm not a huge fan of really loud mufflers, just a personal preference. Hoping a FRS matches up, and is a smaller footprint, those can be found used for fairly low prices. The stock unit kind of hangs / sticks out the back.
It’s official, received my plates from the CA DMV and I’m permanently street legal! Now just waiting on the title etcetera from Sacramento.
When it comes to the SB100 / SPCNS process, it's only 500 permits a year, and they don’t all get used. What this means is, the person you see at the DMV probably hasn’t ever done one… So stay flexible, be polite, budget lots of time. They aren’t trying to be difficult, they just don’t do it every day.
BAR – A number of people have noted that BAR may enforce certain rules sometimes, and not at other times. Some of the rules that tend to be variable are around the windshield and wipers requirement. My suggestion would be to skip the Exocet polycarbonate windshield, and instead spend that money on a “DMV approved” laminated windshield. There’s a number of glass places that will do this, the cost is comparable, and you eliminate the issue (the Exomotive windshield works fine, it's just not the material specified by the DMV).
Thanks Sean, it's nice to be part of the street legal club
Does anyone know what the voltage to the IAC should be on a 1999?
High idle with code P1504. Smoke tested for leaks - none Ohms on the IAC read 9.7 for a range of 8.7 - 10.5 (earlier model years are higher) Throttle body has been cleaned (there's no 'lip' on the butterfly valve, should there be?) Throttle cable has been pulled off - still idles high, so it's not holding it open All connections appear clean Voltage at the IAC & ECU is 12
Manual indicates its the IAC or ECU.
Update: IAC is same as the protege but 25% the cost. Will see if that fixes it.
Okay, got the new IAC valve and installed (technically it's a protege IAC but they're the same). Seems to work better, but it's not quite 100%. At start up it will try to idle to spec, then raise the idle back to the 1100 mark. It also now does 3 things:
1) It makes the sound your car makes when you leave your lights on, but cut it off. That annoying hum. Didn't do this previously, and does after it takes a minute to warm up 2) It sounds like it's trying to pressurize / suck something the whole time. When I cut the car off, it depressurizes... might be the brake booster or intake... not sure 3) Turning the headlights on, the idle goes up and down. Turn the lights off, then it stops.
Any thoughts are appreciated! It was throwing P1504 before changing the IAC, have cleared the codes, so will see what it comes back with.
Update: TEN to GRND causes the car to stall and engine dies
Took the car out for a quick spin to check the new IAC and see if I couldn't trigger any new CEL codes... weird thing is it kept stalling when not on the gas. Turns our the idle was down around 650-700, and looks like a quick tweak on the idle screw puts it back at 850 and runs much smoother.
The annoying hum is definitely the air intake, not sure how I'll fix that, but sounds like it's sucking air really hard.
Something is still funky when it's cold. Idle goes up and down... the journey continues.
Also got this....... 2.5 in inlet, 2.5 inch outlets. Am told it won't be THAT much louder than stock given everything else is still stock.
Hi All - Okay, idle creates an annoying hum, it's coming from the air intake tube. I cleaned the MAF with spray, tried removing the filter, all still hums. Here's how it hums, then you can hear it "sigh" when the car shuts down. It started doing this with the new IAC valve. Thoughts welcome

Magnaflow 2.5 inch inlet, 2.5 inch dual outlet with stock resonator etcetera. Sound is slightly deeper, but very far from what I consider to be obnoxiously loud. Overall, very pleased.

Looks a hell of a lot better too..now for some high temp paint or a frame and open screen to hide it.

Looks great! Do you have the part number for that muffler?
It's the camaro / firebird muffler. Couple different pipe diameters, 12265 or 12267, there's another, but that gets you close enough and you can pick which fits your needs.
Car suddenly makes a terrible squeaking noise, and it comes from here. Any tips on how to grease it? Does it require unbolting the whole thing?
Welcome to the world of poly bushings..They can be drilled and zerk fitting installed for greasing

Hi All - been working on the fenders and hope to post on that soon, but in the mean time have been working on the square transmission fill plug. Any tips on this?
I've tried 12 point sockets which starts to round it. I'm down to a 15mm crescent, but can't enough leverage. Sprayed with penetrating oil. Have let it sit. If this thing ever comes out I may try replacing it with a proper bolt. Only thing I can think of trying is a pipe over the crescent wrench to make it into a breaker bar.
Also appears that photobucket no longer allows image linking to 3rd party sites unless users pay $400 a year..... so will have to figure out a new way post images.

I can't help with the transmission question, but I use imgur.com for photos.
