Phil.. NO NO must have coolant fan.. at least one.. If you don't have room on back of radiator get a pusher type (OEM is puller) and mount it on front side if it.. Or a couple of like 12" fans and mount to rear of it.. these aftermarkets should come with plastic mounting hardware that push through the core and secure fan.. Check eBay under radiator fans.. Get the largest units that fits..

Hi Phil,
I've recent fitted a ally rad upgrade to our UK Exocet (1995 1.8 mk1).
I found the plastic fan shroud failed on the air intake and the roll bar, as the aftermarket rad is wider than the OEM rad. I move the fan across to the other side of the rad (away from the air intake) and then ground away some of the shroud and fan mounting arms to give me sufficient clearance between it and the roll bar. It was a trial and error but it worked fine.
You might want to try this before going to the expense of new fans.
John

I will check how the fan is mounted on my car, Evan, you have to use at least 25mm wheel spacers because of the way the guard mounts are made.

Cheers Lou, I'm off today to see if I can get some more rims with 10-15 offset and if I can't then I'll get the spacers from Mania. I think my engineer might like the rims rather than the spacers but I'll get hub centric ones if I go that path. Thanks for the heads up

For some humour, an MX5 Haynes manual is also en route from UK (said with a wry smile). Having spent too much of my early life with mechanically attention seeking cars, I am familiar with the joys of Haynes (Triumph TR6, kombi, Escort, capri, magna). I almost thought I could get away with ipad and intuition for the relatively 'lego' exocet build, but here I am eating humble pie and looking forward to getting oily thumb prints all over it. Evan - I'll be checking up on your wheel guard mounts - still haven't worked out the mounting arrangement. John - I must say your final pics (page 30 onwards) are pretty much the benchmark in build quality. Aspirational. Finally getting there with exhaust. Cut/re-welded stainless and combination of dismantling, bending upstream parts and fabricating tapered shim and swearing a lot ! Just need some tweaks to extend driver-side hanger to position can slightly towards passenger side to clear diff. All part of the build challenge.

The mounts are pretty rudimentary and simple to make a few with a bigger bend in them so I'm going to go that way (at least for rego) as because as I've put in other posts when the govt States the max track width only 20mm bigger than standard I can't run spacers! Should be picking up the frame at the end of the month as I'm away next couple of weeks

Fans and arrived but too wide for custom rad due to reservoir welded on side. Out comes the grinder again (solves most problems) chopped shroud in half, folded edge to maintain seal against flutes and created custom aluminium bridge bracket for the should bracket spacing which was inevitably different ! So 1 fan instead of 2 - half the weight eh ?! Also opted to re-hang the rad brackets below the frame bars to improve bonnet cap clearance and prevent fan clash with water pump which required extra frigging around with red riling brackets, etc but overall happy with reassembled end result.

Glad to have Hen on board today who was genuinely helpful, with some smart ideas and good humour. Rugby league on radio, tea and making stuff together - very rewardi

Front grille on nose. Now radiator is locked in we can work back through bonnet positioning, dashboard, instrument cluster and some internal arrangements. Still waiting for seat rails, then I can lock in battery mounting and get going on electrics. Aiming to finalize exhaust welding and rear can mounting next week, then potentially turning key in august...

Grille looks good you'll be starting yours when I get my frame by the sounds! Is the grille just from somewhere like SuperCheap auto? And how did you fix it on?

Howdy Evan, ebay: about $35 for 1.2 x 0.5 ish hex pattern, comes with clips (attached with no-nails ultimate strength). Used about half of the panel on nose and am looking to use other half around rear end / exhaust can to tidy up rear end aesthetics. Haynes has arrived - love the simpleton wiring diagrams (main reason for buy). Bonnet hinges now mounted.

Super excited at the moment although I don't think my wife is sharing the same enthusiasm!
