Didn't see a thread specifically discussing and I've seen a few different answers, so let's talk. Where does the Exocet fall in the SCCA Solo classing? I've heard D Mod (and I think A Mod) and I'm admittedly green in the mod section as a whole. How does that change when you slap on a turbo or supercharger? What about jamming in a Honda 4 or 6 cylinder? Topping it out, where would Flyin Miata's XXXocet fall? Most importantly, can I make a cardboard body and keep running in ES? Because that .808 PAX multiplier would pretty much guarantee a nice finish .

Currently AM. The SEB evaluated the very early versions w/o bodywork and said they didn't fit the feel of DM/EM as being a replica of another car. I think someone with a car with finished bodywork should re-submit the car for classing and see if we can't get it classified w/ the Lotus 7 clones.

One advantage to the SCCA AM class, no matter what you do to the car, it will still be in the AM class.
Lots of FTD's, but not very good in PAX.
I hope we get enough built and running in the SCCA so us little 1.6 and 1.8 NA guys get to move down a bit.

When I read the rulebook, it seemed to conform to all the regulations of a DM car, but I haven't explored it further with my local region as mine isn't finished.

The AM guy locally is way to goshdarn fast. He beat me (in my ES Miata) by an honest 10 seconds raw today. The DM and EM Lotus 7 clones are quick, but not nearly that quick.

I'm pretty sure the local guys will let us run DM with a stock 1.8, but it's up to the local club to decide what to do and we don't have a working car yet to plead our case. The turbo changes things as you'd expect. We e-mailed one of our senior local guys and he said: If you want to run DM at Nationals I see a bit of a hill to climb in trying to get it classed as a kit car. If you want to go down that path www.sebscca.com is where you start. I highly recommend you read the modified rules as section 18.1.A.1 shows there are currently no kit cars approved. Everyone running a Lotus 7 either has a real Lotus or runs as a clone like I do.
"Members desiring approval of a particular kit car should provide the SEB with detailed information regarding the kit model and contact info, if available, for the OE manufacturer."

I learned more about mod classes today while running my Miata. According to the guy I talked with, aero (front and rear wings) are not allowed in EM or DM, can anyone confirm? Also sounds like force fed Exocets would run in EM, NA in DM.
Related, we had a turbo Locost with a giant wing running in DM, said guy laughed and said he was doing it all wrong.

FYI, got an answer to an email I sent to the SEB a while back:
I've been discussing with the local guys in our forum, looks like I'll probably be in BM.

I still think that with a concerted push we could get a DM classing. Geometry wise, it's close enough to a Miata to where I think it really fits nicely, and the weight is high enough to keep it honest with the 7 clones.

I agree. But limited downforce in DM, so no wings allowed.

I've actually had a back and forth with a MAC member (Modified Advisory council - i.e., the people who make the rules for Modified classes). He made some suggestions on types of data to gather and why the MAC had initially dismissed classing the Exocet in D/EM. The reasoning there was that there was really not any defining bodywork that would keep anyone from building a clone that is much narrower than the car as produced and other competitive cars in the class. I proposed that maybe part of the classing for the car could specify a caveat that the frame dimensions must be no smaller than an unmodified factory Exocet frame, which would alleviate those concerns, and he was interested in that idea. So I just need to get the time to gather the data he has asked for (dimensions, weight, production numbers, etc.). Once I get those things gathered, I am going to have him take another look before I make the official submission. It's already too late to make any changes for this year, so I haven't had this as the highest priority yet (I am still about 6-9 months out from ordering my kit at this point, so having a place to race my as yet un-purchased kit hasn't been the squeakiest wheel yet). I will be sure to make another post in this thread after I have my next draft proposal together to see if you guys have any feedback as well before I mail it in.

Please let me know if you need anything. I know a lot of the local RMSolo guys and can take any measurements you might need.
