As mentioned in another thread this is my restart of a Exocet from two years ago. So here we go again! My donor is a 1.6 '89 MX-5, it's stripped, body off and sat in the garage. I'm currently in the process of removing and replacing as many bushes as I can. Order has been placed for the kit and can't wait for it to come! This the only pic I have at the moment which was taken once I lined my garage, more pics to follow as I go! First question! I've managed to remove the nuts on the wishbone arms but can't remove the bolts? Anyone else had this problem or am I missing something obvious? Cheers Attachments:

Another decent day in the garage, almost finished stripping all the wishbones off.
Plan was to treat all parts with rust remover, then red oxide primer followed by black hammerite top cost. Anyone else tried this or got better suggestions? Cheers

I didn't want to spend money on blasting and powder coatings so did all the rust removal myself. Rust removers don't tend to have the penetration needed and I had to resort to brutish rotating wire brushes. See the first couple of pages on my thread "NITRAM's BUILD".

I second what nitram has said. One of these on a 4inch grinder and away to go!

that's what I did - 2x motorised wire brush, ala above and a litre of hammerite, you can crack it in a couple of nights.

Don't forget a good face shield and hat.. Just what would it cost to get all the suspension bits and subs blasted over there..

About £200 for blasting, primer and powder coating on subframes, wishbones and loads of other items including pedal assembly in fact all the items that are sat on my garage floor in my build threat.

Ok time for a quick update on what's happened over the last week or so.
All wishbones and the anti roll bars are off the car and with a mate who's gonna blast, coat and fit new bushes. I went with the Energy poly bush kit on eBay for £260, don't know if this was a mistake or not!
Also the rear subframe is off to A) replace the diff mount bushes which have had it. And B) get good access to the subframe to freshen it up! Unfortunately when removing the last small nut around the diff bushes the bolt just snapped in my hand, so anther delay before getting the subframe back on and put together!
Sourced the engine oil leak, thankfully just the cam cover gasket so easy fix, and the front subframe is preped for painting tonight fingers crossed!
No pics worth showing you as it's just the same only less parts!
I am struggling with a decision which I'm sure you guys will be able to help with: I need new springs and shocks - the old ones are expletive deleted - so no choice there but the question is replace with standard ones or upgrade? The ones I've been looking at are the Gaz fixed height ones on mx5 parts for £449? For the price this seemed the better option! Your thoughts please!

Got home today and now I have the biggest grin on my face!
Reason? Well just got a letter saying my kit is ready for collection next week!!!!
Now I need to get on with clearing the front half of my garage to fit it in, and finish off the subframes etc, had a busy few days ordering nice new parts to go on it, can't wait to get stuck in!
Does anyone know if mx5 heaven (or any other place) buy used parts, I've still got quite a lot which I've been struggling to shift for a while and just want rid! Thanks!

Early start this morning but well worth it!
Picked my kit up and was so happy with how it looks! I went for the GRP in green and black powder coated chassis.
Will put up a few pics when I can!
Can't wait to get stuck in!

IMO its far better to get the frame powder coated at a later date. I made some mods to mine and had some grinding to do so was very glad i did not get it powder coated from the factory
Goodluck with your build

In mine I welded in inserts to mount the radiator and also mounts for the brake pipes etc. One piece of advice though mount your seats before drilling the holes for the floor as the seat mounts are pretty much set so mine ended up coming thru the floor rivets which was not ideal but if I had of had the seats fitted I would of repitched these
