And so it began.......
Some background info for this project-
With already having to many cars at the house I have had to rent a lock-up for my build. Yes its more hassle and cost but its gets me out of the house and the workshop is a good size 40ft X 20f.
My cars at the house are a Subaru 2.5 WRX, Mazda MX5 MK3 2.0, Mazda 1.8 MK1 (which is my trackcar).
Girlfriend has a Hyundai i20.
To build the Exocet and have another donar was more than she could bare at the house so hence the lockup.
On a trackday at Kirkiston race track I got a little sideways and then snap hooked into the tyre wall resulting in some serious damage. In order to patch up my track car myself and a good friend Richard bought an identical black mk1 mx5 1.8 although this was a 1993 Eunos S Spec for £900
We replaced my door and front wing and he took the hardtop for his own rather amazing mk1 mx5. We sold the wheels and I took bumpers, bootlids etc and he kept the interior.
He stored the car at his house.
Last xmas Eve I was on gumtree and discovered a Jackson M45 Supercharger kit for a 1.8 on sale in London. This was a complete kit with Emanage blue, boomslang , tensioners & pulleys for around the 1k mark. I immediately rang Richard who I knew was in London visiting his girlfriend to go buy me this supercharger. He was not well pleased as it was 60 miles away. He rang the guy and said he would be there in 3 days. Each day he lifted the max £300 from his cash machine and then had to ask the girlfriend to lend him a £100 (did not go down to well). He met the guy and my supercharger was bought. Unfortunatley those b__tards at easy jet charged him £80 excess baggage.
The plan was to fit this to the track car but due to him being in love and me getting an extension on my house this never happened.
This was last year and only recently I discovered the MEV site. I then ordered the "How to build a MEV Exocet" from kit car magazine and so decided to go for it.
Sat 24th June
I go to Richards house in Ballynahinch to give him a hand pushing the mx5 donar onto the trailor. That was good fun with just 2 of us.
Car is then transported to workshop in Bangor for about 10am.
Good clean engine on the donar
Stripping begins..
The front bumper is a complete nightmare but eventally we get all doors, wings and bonnet , handbrake off etc. Also exhaust and shock bolts disconnected I was locking up at 10pm.
Sun 9am
Air con, radiator out and then the loom disconnected from the body. Some of the loom clips are quite tricky as some are push the clips and others are pull. We lossened off all the sub frame bolts. I would advise anyone doing this to ensure you have at least a 18" breaker bar. Steering rack disconnected and all fuel lines released. We had jacks under the subframes so we removed all the bolts. Another very good tip is before we removed the body from the car I got a few friends round and we raised the body a few inches and got someone underneath to ensure nothing was going to catch. We nothiced we had forgotted about a couple of fuel lines, loom connected to the powerplant frame and the starter motor.
At this stage it was getting very late so we called it a day but the body was alot heavier than I was expecting so going to get an Engine Crane.
I was very pleased that we did not strip a single bolt and also when i drained the diff and gearbox oil it wad golden so good sign they are in good nic.
