Thanks James, all my tools are air tools, compressor broke about six months ago and can't be repaired so it's hand in pocket time again. Yep My paint man said to start with a colour as close as I could get to final and Stuart sent me a picture of your car to see if that was better than those available. I've tracked down the colour code for the AMR green just need the code for the yellow round the grill.

James looks really tidy and the grey chassis looks the business. I'd be interested in the detail of the grey edging strip supplier and quantity required.

James
Bearing in mind i kind of feel I've hijacked your build thread I'll have a go at setting something up around the general sort of queries that may arise.

Called in at the spray shop yesterday to obtain some colour chips and was redirected to the local auto paint suppliers.
Didn't realise how many metallic greens there are that are close to all the pictures i've seen, pulled out about 20 and narrowed it down to five, would have uploaded the codes this morning but my wife has taken my car (the info is in the glove box) to work.
Will upload tomorrow (although i acknowledge different computer screens/monitors will give different representation of colour).
Continuing the colour theme i thought that rather than go smooth black for the MX5 subframes I'd go Hammerite Mid Green (chassis is powder coated grey), used this years ago in the wheel arches of all my cars (back in the days when i had time) and in addition to looking good it resisted all attacks from road salts and the various stones etc that get thrown up. Only problem is Mid Green no longer appears in the Hammerite range so have dropped them a line to see if it can be made available albeit in a relatively small quantity (anyone else out there interested?). Should say there is still a green in their colour range but is a dark green.

Great cut away picture, I notice spare sits over tank so my idea isn't that original after all.
Assume location of battery helps, if only slightly, in balancing when only driver in car, like the idea but not an option if I route exhaust this way.
On my earlier thoughts on colours was watching Chasing Classic cars the other night and Wayne bought a 1958 Tojeiro racer, with Coventry Climax engine, that was painted in the colour scheme (green with yellow nose band), with red seats, that I am looking for (Just type in Tojeiro Climax in google for a look)
James have you fixed the steering column at the bulkhead yet? I'd be really interested in how you located and fixed.

Love the South Africa picture, could you see that in UK? The boys in blue would have a field day,

Lettering isn't raised on mine but inset so i thought I'd fill with molly metal and paint with wrinkle finish, probably black but may go red!! The wrinkle finish will also carry over into areas of the c*ckpit, again not sure on colour as i want to use red leather (subject to cost) seats so could be either black or red.

Red 5 Thanks and no doubt the queries will come thick and fast when i start dismantling.
Snowbird1 I was thinking of placing spare above tank(looking to have my filler under a flip cover where it was on the original) but unable to confirm dimensions until i take delivery. I suspect this area will be big enough to stow the flat 'full size' wheel and tyre the issue might be the position of the seats (I propose to access the tyre from the cockpit via access through rear bulkhead).

Hi James
At last another Replicar builder and not a million miles away (I am in the Derbyshire Peaks near the Blue John Mines).
I too have ordered (expected 2nd week in Oct) the same base colour and plan to paint in metallic as per the original trouble is there are lots of variations and pictures can look a different colour. I'd be interested in the colour code if you have it, i'm planning the yellow grill surround and an aluminium egg crate grill. By the way i've also ordered the chassis in grey powder coat and am considering clear lacquer for the ally panels (I plan to use the car whatever the weather, and we get lots of rain in the peaks). I was going to hammerite the sub frames in smooth grey, or even the hammered light green, but recognise that powder coating may be a better option.
I've gone the easy route on the wheels and ordered the wires from MEV.
I havent started stripping the MX5 (1.8 mk2 5 speed) yet as i haven't yet received the V5, will start as soon as.
I propose to fill in the wheel arches to protect the body, would like to do in ally but may end up using the MX5 plastic liners cut to fit, also planning to use the space saver wheel over petrol tank accessed via back of seats (i want to use the car for trips to Le Mans, next years classic is the first target). Planning to open up the vents on the wings but recognise this will need some changes to the passenger compartment and considering running the exhaust in the sill with outlet just in front of rear wheel.

Just placed my order, purchased my donor, and sorted the workshop so thought it might be a good idea to put something on the forum asking for others to give me the benefit of their experience.
I have no doubt that many of you will have gone through the pain that I am likely to suffer, IVA, DVLA, and the various problems associated with construction (although it was the simplicity of the kit that drew my attention) and as such would ask you to be sympathetic to questions the answers to which may appear obvious to you.
In respect of a bit of info about myself, I am a recently retired Structural Engineer who in my teens and early 20s messed about with various cars, spent most of my adult life paying others to repair, service, modify my cars but now have the time, and desire, to do this myself.
I am located in the NW of the Peak District National Park and am particularly interested in making contact with anyone building a MEV Replicar.
I have ordered my car in a (non standard) light green to make the spraying of the Aston Martin metallic top coat easier and am keen to establish what the correct paint colour code is ---- Does anyone out there know?
Should say the donor is a 1.8 Mk 2 MX5 with 5 speed box.
Potential moves away from the demonstrator, other than colour, include roll bar/s (twin hoops?), and bigger brakes and i'm still not convinced by the back end though understand IVA drives the straightening of the curves. I'd also like to run the exhaust through the near side sill and out in front of the rear wheel but will look at this more closely when the kit arrives.
Starting to ramble a little so probably time to end this post.
Looking forward to hearing from others.

I too an showing my age as I recall using this product in the 70s but years away from painting cars in my dads garage and the memory had faded until I read this thread. My interest is based on the fact that I cant get the gel coat for my kit (replicar) in the colour I want but am struggling to find any metallic colours in the product (used my search engine but no metallics). I am fortunate to have a friend who has a body shop so getting the car painted wouldn't be a problem but my recollection of the finishes we achieved back in the 70s (please no rose tinted spec comments)was better than anything I've seen with modern spray products.
Thales ~ do you know whether I can get tekaloid in a colour something similar to the metallic blue/green used by Aston Martin in the 50s?
