A few more little last minute jobs done. I wasnt happy with the amount of light from my reverse lights so I upgraded to this one from CBS.... I've also mounted a seperate horn push button on the cowl... Side panel fitted for IVA only, just to stop them prodding around the pedals with the sphere. I'll take it off later. Insured now and fuelled up for MOT and IVA. Not long now!

A final bit of IVA work I added 15 degrees of left kick up to the headlights and change to high performance bulbs, £17.50 each but a huge difference! They have nice blue tint when switched off.... For those that havent read my build thread maybe thinking the indicators look ridiculous up there, yes they do but thats my IVA position. Post test will be more like this.... IVA test this Friday coming and a pre MOT on Thursday! Wish me luck

So with IVA in mind I booked yesterday off for an MOT before the IVA test today. Well Ive been feeling a little jinxed in all this as yesterday after booking an MOT on the VIN number I drove 3 mile to the test centre, close to arrival there I started to notice a misfire (not good). Then they told me they cant test it on the VIN, after I already explained to them I dont need it logged! And them taking the booking. Anyway got the car home and pulled the plugs and all coked (running rich). Changed the plugs and all good and left as is so it will run nice for IVA but obviously probably fail emissions at IVA. Later Thursday DVSA called me to say the speed check equipment at Southampton was up the spout but I should attend anyway as they are trying to sort! Grrrrrrrrrrr On to test Trailer pick up this morning and off to the test! Yes finally!! :-) The Caterham was a privately built car but pre-prepped and put through IVA by Caterham, their test was suspended after about an hour and a half but inspectors wouldnt say why to me. Anyway so back to mine then....... The guys were great and my Inspector was absolutely brilliant and genuinely interested in the car he'd only done 1 other and that was Toby's 2 years ago. As those that have read my build will know Im running a standalone ecu and had it set up at Skuzzle with focus on emissions fro ECU so all good! Anyway he spent ages under the car visually on the brakes (rightly so). He popped back up and said so fa so good! Happy days as he then said' this really is a cracking build well done' Anyway I passed absolutely everything with zero advisories and he was happy to listen to my reasons/ justifications for everything and also guys they had to refer to the manual sometimes so please read it not the bloke down the interweb pub and not google lol :-). THEN!!!! Emissions failed, high CO and Lambda. There could be a multitude of reasons why as the car has been started loads since November, not got hot or been above 1500 rpm so ECU and Lamda could be saying biz as usual. But I dint get a fail as there speedo equipment was not working so I have whats called a free continuation test. Parting comment from the inspector was 'awesome job you made my job easy and enjoyable today' :-) Notes. 1. He did check I could reach light switches when harnessed in (others havent had this and have buttons on the wiring tray) 2. I put 13 degrees left kick up in the headlights and me and him adjusted aim 3. He didnt ask for ID, receipts, photos, NOTHING at all 4. They didnt test inside the front of the chassis with the sphere, said its the same as a wheelarch (his words) 5. They didnt test any radius on handbrake mech 6. They dont need to see under the tank cover or an earth, from underneath he said 'is that the MX5 tank bolted straight to the chassis' when I said yes he said cool 7. MSR coliovers are an awesome ride for the price point 8. Don't sweat it guys or over think it, theyre a great buch, even made me Tea half way through the test!! So anyway a good and bad day but would have had to go back anyway due to the speedo check machines and I dont have to pay. Am sorting emissions diag on my laptop with Skuzzle on the phone with me, joys of a programmable ECU. Overall I enjoyed the whole day. Happy days :-)

Good job getting to where you are, how long you got to wait for the final parts of the test? Must be really frustrating knowing your that close to getting it on the road. Just a quick question, you said the examiner said the brakes were awesome. Did you stick with the standard calipers and just fit new braided hoses or did you change up the calipers as well? I'm only asking as I'm not sure if I should uprate the calipers on mine as I'm going to be doubling the horsepower, or will the standard calipers be up to the job? I was going to fit braided hoses as a matter of course as I always change them when I purchase a new bike as the definitely take away the sponginess of normal brake lines.

Test will be quick once I sort emissions mate. Standard mk2 1.8 calipers, rears just got cleaned and painted, new pair of standard up front car fully braided throughout, drilled discs and Mintex pads mate. Im at 160FWHP by the way. Lots of MX5 turbos running on mk2 OEM brakes as they are bigger than earlier and 1.6 models. Exocet much lighter than the donor. HTH

All sorted with Skuzzle doing a remote session on my ecu/car. The narrow band optimal target setting was way out. BAck for the continuation test on the 3rd June Amazing watching someone control your engine from 35 miles away!

Went to an MOT tester for emissions this weekend and failed again. Am getting a custom CAT back made, looking under the car at the temporary exhaust I made, the flexi is all black which leads me to believe air leaks in the exhaust effecting Lambda. Am having it done at Skuzzle soon and will fit new plugs and a new Lambda retune the ecu with a probe up the exhaust and test again. Should all be good to go then!
