The shells is sitting on the drive, in the dark & just needs the fuel tank, handbrake VIN, windscreen wiper linkage & boot hinges removing & we're done...off to the scrap yard. But its dark & we have no light, so after a weekend off, & Joseph's back home from school, time to start stripping the backend.... Exhaust back box removed & N/S brake pipe flexi split O/S brake flexi split (and no corrosion on rear brake pipe mounted to sub frame ) Then time to start with all the bolts... and then times up for tonight...

yours is coming apart so much easier than mine did but that'll be one of the bonuses of using a newer doner car

We have only needed either WD-40 or the trolley jack bar on the wrench to break free the bolts. Regarding the back end, we only plan to strip the sub frame and wish bones to base fabrication level for power coating, the iron castings will get a wire bruch and a lick of black paint, and then all back together. A bit of detail in red to highlight, i.e. Red Poly Bushes and Brake Pipes.
Does any one know where you can get red drive shaft boots ?

Well i'm won't be getting a medal for playing kit car in the snow today... With minimal changes to the engine planned (may be an air filter & exhaust updgrade), do we need to make any changes to the brakes? We plan on white wheels & red calipers, so dust could be an issue, out current status of chassis dis-assembly makes access easy, but with the weight reduction, will any changes be necessary? Had a quick look at the EBC greenstuiff pads, & then the ultimax discs www.ebcbrakesdirect.com/default.asphatbut could get carried away with upgrades & may be no change at all, and just change as they need replacing...

I think its unlikely a brake upgrade would be necessary due to the weight reduction.
but it wont do any harm
you might also want to reconsider using EBC pads I know of a number of lads who have had problems with EBC greenstuff and warping discs.

good progress chaps, coming alomg nicely. I went down the route of standard brakes and pads due to the huge weight reduction, just cleaned and painted them red. Had my engine rebuilt by a mechanic friend, his advice was simple, as the cars so light and HP upgrades are almost double, a stainless steel 4-2-1 exhaust from ebay for £90 and a decat pipe plus K&N airfilter (the round type, which allows removal of the box) adds about 30-40 bhp. the next upgrades are fast road cams and throttle bodies, but i had to draw the line somewhere at cost. once you start looking at extra upgrades you then have to up the injectors, fuel pump and ecu ect so cost skyrockets!

tim, the exhaust looks like a 4 in to 1 rather than a 4-2-1. 4-2-1 allows slightly better breathing. it replaces the whole front section and bolts directly to the cat ( which ive also replaced with a cheap decat pipe). it also has the plug for the air temp sensor. heres mine, the k&n air filter looks good, but you need to retain the Mass Air Flow Sensor or you may have issues. (the red box with plug behind the filter) I just went for a filter on its own with an adaptor to fit directly onto the front of the sensor, this allows for removal of the entire box under the sensor as its a tight fit. (£25 for the lot on ebay) alex

Alex/Anyone, I can't find a 4-2-1 manifold for my car (2004 Mk 2.5 1.8 Euphonic), any suggestions where to look? Otherwise its look in a copy of a mx 5 car mag next time I dare leave the village for a visit to WH Smiths... The K&N red typhoon kit could look good with the red / white theme... Tim

I have the 4-1 you first put up the longer primaries on the 4-1 will help with torque and the 4-2-1 will help with hp
most of the manifolds I've seen listed for the 1.8 are 4-1 and the 1.6 are 4-2-1 design
on the brakes a decent set of discs and pads are all you'll need I've ebc ultimax pads and standard discs on an mx5 before and they work well, my other choice would be longest pads
