Good to hear Jon. I bet you can hardly wait to get started on the further build. I just bought a 99 for my donor in Indianapolis and will be going to the Kit car and Import national show at Carlisle PA next weekend to check them out and likely place my order. The offer still stands if you want any help. Cool. Come over once my frame comes!

Congrats!
What was the lead time for your chassis build? I am hoping to place my order later this summer or fall.

Congrats! What was the lead time for your chassis build? I am hoping to place my order later this summer or fall. I ordered in late December. Exomotive quoted me 20 weeks. Looks like they are right on time!

They're cooking right along if yours is finished and ready for powder. Mine is #114, uncoated and just arrived at the UPS depot today.

Hi Jon, I'm also in the Detroit area (Beverly Hills) and have a race chassis on order for August delivery. I'd like to help if I can.

I think I am going to put some better rods when the engine builder refreshes my engine. He explained the cost would be minimal compared to the cost of rebuilding already. We are also investigating do some machining work on the crank nose to make the keyway longer and avoid the short nose problems of the 90 MY cars.
I have spent the last 2 weeks selling parts off the Miata on Craigslist. Nearly everything is gone! I have been giving away good deals, and parts went really quick. It was easy. Anyone looking to build an Exocet with a Miata that is in OK shape can expect to make $1000 - $1500 on the part out.
I am pulling off the body tub this weekend on Saturday. I think I have all the help I need, but if any Detroit guys want to come and see, you are welcome. PM me.

instead of doing machine work to the crank nose, you could just swap in large nose 1.6 crank. also, do a quick search but even a 1.8 crank MIGHT fit. You can get those things for cheap

Actually, assuming that the crank nose has the real estate to machine, this will be a pretty cheap fix. I have not found a 'long nose' 1.6L crank that is a direct bolt in to fix it. The later 'big nose' cranks can be found and require a few different parts to make work (oil pump, timing belt gear, ect).

The body is off! Everything went pretty easy, even after 25 years of rust. Some of the subframe bolts were difficult and took all my strength, but they went without stripping. The harness was a hassle, and the steering column was pretty suck in place, but otherwise things are moving well!

Awesome. That must be a good feeling. Sorry I missed it since I am in Carlisle checking out the Exocet at the kit car show but at least it looked like you had plenty of help. Congrats on the progress.I'm glad to hear the rust hasn't been too problematic as my 99 donor is from IN where rust is also common. Did you soak everything first in penetrating oil?

Yeah, an overnight soak in PB Blaster, then I hit them with my impact gun to shake it for a while, then I took my breaker bar to it.

Happy to report the frame is home! It looks great. Thank you exomotive for the smooth pickup. I rented a 12 foot penske truck and drove it back to Michigan. Almost did the whole drive in one day. Managed to get a friend to join, too. The powder looks great in crystal grey.

Awesome looking color Jon. Did you rent the van up here in MI and drive both ways or fly down, rent and drive back? I am trying to weigh the cost difference vs value of not driving both ways with associated motel and fuel costs vs having it shipped. Did you get body panels or are all the boxes in the truck the normal kit stuff?

I flew to Atlanta and drove back. Had enough frequent flyer miles for a free trip. I rented the truck on short notice... so it ended up costing $600 after taxes and insurance. If I would have booked earlier it may have been half that cost. We almost did it in one night day, but got tired and got a hotel in Ohio.
The whole trip cost ~$900 with everything factored in, about the same as shipping a bare un-powdercoated frame (but cheaper than shipping the powder coated frame).
The body panels are not ready yet, they are going to ship those in a few months. The boxes are all the other bits you get from exomotive.
