Ah I see how you set that up. The turn signal still keeps the self cancel by turning the wheel?
Edit: never mind. I grabbed mine and figured out its the white center plastic that operates the auto cancel. I like your idea to ground the horn thru the shaft. I will make sure not to powder coat that contact when I coat the shaft.

Keep in mind the ground is the steering rack gears, not the tube that you have powder coated.

I was thinking it would ground where the rack attaches to the firewall but it attaches to the pedal assemblies I just coated.

I'm completely stumped about how to get this lock tumbler out of the cylinder. At first I thought maybe the brass tabs just pressed in with a punch and it would come out but no such luck. On most cars, there's usually just a single metal tab or button you press with the key turned to the ACC position and the whole thing just pulls right out. Is the release tab hidden by the shaft? Do I need to cut the mounting bolts off and separate it from the shaft to expose the release?

d**n it. Removing the whole assembly might be exactly what I need to do... www.ebay.com/itm/301278309499 Edit: That square metal piece protruding up inside the shaft is just the lock which holds the wheel in place with the key out. I'm stumped. No idea how to get that tumbler out.

Here is the replacement bolt part number that you need. The shiny rivet looking things on the clamp are break off bolts. Cut a slot in the head of the bolt and remove with a large flat head screw driver or hammer and punch them counter-clockwise till they come out. www.quirkparts.com/oe-mazda/zzca60436

I'm not looking to remove the cylinder from the shaft. I'm looking at pulling out the tumbler from the cylinder. The part that the key turns.

Got it. Used a 1/16th drill bit and drilled out the 4 brass pins. After getting them out, the tumbler easily pulled out of the cylinder with the key turned to the ACC position.

So what do you advise a new builder like me to do to avoid the same problem? Robert

I'm going to some extreme lengths to keep the stock turn stalk but use an after market steering wheel with a horn button in the center as well as mounting the push button starter in the position as the stock key hole.
For a new guy like you who is probably looking at the absolute simplest setup, I would recommend just keeping the stock setup including the steering wheel.
