Hi h5ngs
I considered that but that price includes vat the vrt is €1610 and the rest is vat but they have estimated the chassis as €3800 plus vat @ 23% .when it was only €2640 they have over charged me on the chassis Even if I sent it to the uk they still charge me VRT on bringing it back to ireland it a no win situation and the worst thing is they know it all ready in Ireland so if i Tried to export it the still charge me the VAT as it was in the country what a shower of .........
I have to plan my next move

H5ngs, was going to be my shout. If you sell the original mx5 to me for £1. When the v5c (or whatever the Irish equivalent comes along) I'll apply for a IVA test which you can attend for me ;-) and when passed sell it back to you for £1. Simply import it as a taxed and tested uk car? Only cost then is the IVA and ferry crossing?

Yup seems the best way to do it, and cheapest, then also when time comes to sell might be easier to sell being registered in the uk. Not sure why it would make a difference but some people can be fussy when it comes to where cars were registered. This does sound the best option tho, they also dont need to know how much it sold for thats private aslong as the V5c changes ownership and in this case country

Thank guys
I have all ready tough of all the options But regardless of where the car comes from once it hits the Irish roads it is liable for VRT and vat on a new car ( I know it not new) but it has a new chassis and they class it as new so I pay VAT at 23% on the value they tough of not the price i payed for it but i fighting this at the moment
I would have to lived and worked in the UK for 6 Mt's or more and produce utility bills ,bank statements etc to prove to them i was out of the state it would be exempt then . If you drove around on UK plated you would be stopped By a Garda and asked what the story and if he did not take the car off you the Customs would take it and make you pay VRT
No matter how I go about it for me building a kit car or any one importing a car to Ireland they will have to pay VRT to put Irish plates on it and drive it on the roads
As I said some time back there has been no kit car built and registered in Ireland in the last 3 to 2 Years so they have all the time in the world to make the rules as they go
And as soon as I get the plates ,Pay the road tax ,Insure it bring it for a road trip I will only be a couple of miles down the road when i get stopped be a Garda looking for all the paperwork and this will probably be the case every time i bring it out
I spent the last 24 Hrs thinking long and hard on what to do I just don't know I waiting for a call fro my contact in revenue to discus the VAT over charge will have to wait and see

Geoff
When you purchased the kit from MEV did you pay UK VAT ?
and I assume the donor was irish so this was taxed and Vat payed etc.
My point is you do not ( usually ) pay VAT on something twice. Therefore you could look at a rebate from the Uk or use your receipt to offset your Irish bill???

Hi red5
I did not pay the vat in the UK as I would have to pay it here anyway But the Law here states if I bought a new car in the uk and paid the vat ect when I bring it into Ireland I pay vat on it again but I can reclaim the vat from the uk government but they are a lot of issues regarding this
My argument is our revenue have valued the chassis at € 3800 plus vat when it was only € 2650 plus vat . All vat is charged at 23% they never asked for a receipt or proof of payment from me and they are over charging me € 250
I get it sorted this week I hope

Gutted for you. I thought it was expensive over here!!! As h5ngs said could you not iva it and register it over here? I know its not good but if you decided to sell you should at least get your money back if not make a tidy sum. Cheers, John.

Keep it as a track car only. The VRT amount would cover a right lot of track days! Or can you not register it to a friend up North but just keep it hidden in your garage? You'd not be doing that many miles in it sure, so you could take your chances!

Would you still have to pay tax if it was a gift or loan? I'm pretty sure I could drive my uk plate x5 in Ireland whilst on holiday with no hassle. Sell it to me for a £1 I'll get it uk registered and then "loan it to you" or "give it to you as a birthday present" and keep the v5c uk based. Got to think of all the options. I had a slightly devious thought last night. Buy an mot failure mx5 from Ireland (if you can) for a few hundred quid, and swap the donor details. Would this help? After all, they cant prove otherwise as the only identification on the whole Exocet from the original donor is the engine number? Avoids any sort of import bits?

Thanks Guys for all the toughts
All because it is a new chassis.
I was talking to my contact in revenue today and she had a meeting with her supervisor in regard to it and they advised me to pay the duty and vat then straight away file a appeal to my local tax office .She can't see how they can charge that much vat when 90% of the car is Irish. I asked her would I have a good case for some refund and she would not comment but said file the appeal straight away
She Knew all about the MEV and it costs and she quoted the net price
so I recon I will pay the duty at the end of the month and get the plates sorted
The next thing is to try get insurance another Battle as there is only one company here that will do it and I sent a pospoal form to them 7 week ago and no answer back
so here we go again

It looks as tho this is going to be a very costly "easier and cheapest kit car to build" for you mate, sorry to hear its such a pain. Hope you manage to get some money back like you said its mostly mx5 anyways. Let us know how you get on tho.

Just out of interest I'm sure I read a post on here somewhere about a member who insured their car as a highly modified MX5. Not strictly legal in the UK but had the documents and insurance to prove it so the police let me have it away with it. I think the insurance was higher but would be offset against the 23% tax. If you can get someone to insure you in this way and you have not scrapped the original vehicle VIN etc then put the original reg plates on; it may be a loop hole / work around, it would just not say MEV Exocet on the logbook.

I am a member of the Irish kit car club and they have a deal with AXA insurance to insure cars as far as I know it is €700 odd to cover the car fully comp For 3500 km a year I know you guys get it for a song, then I have to pay road tax and that is € 677 a year
So add it all up for a couple of weekends a year dogging the rain is it worth it ? Russ : it all to do with the chassis number because it new it classed as a new car ,I would love to put the original plates on it and pay no VRT but that don't work here
I wish My kids where a bit older or very young that I could get out of this country ,they want to screw us in every way in ireland we pay higher in everything ,I lived in london for a year in 2003 and traveled back & forth every weekend to here the flights where cheaper to get anywhere everything was only a tube away and you got value for your pound well so I tough , I probably getting grumpy as I get older, or wiser to all that going on ,it hard to know
