As I found out the hard way, don't attempt to vinyl wrap large items by yourself. You need at least one other person to hold the wrap up of the item while you smooth it out with the heat gun. Yeah, the battery ran out before the really bad bit, but it's a mad dog's breakfast where the fuel tank will be (phew!), once it bunched up there was no putting right, I must've pulled it up and heated it two dozen times. Looks like I'll be going back to good ol' paint. My donor is Magnum grey, so I'm going to buy some, tidy up some scruffy panels by way of practice, sell what is saleable, and by the end of it, hopefully be ready to do my own GRP panels. Hopefully the bonnet, sides etc will cover most of the cost of the paint.

Video of my poor attempt to Vinyl-wrap the floor. I'll get away with it as the scruffiest bits will be under things. Got some pretty sweet blisters on my fingertips doing this without gloves or a squeegee but honestly it would've been much worse if I'd tried. Plan to wrap the central tunnel and instrument column in a nice brushed aluminium vinyl look like a non-starter, might try and just 'brush' it instead.

I would have put it on ages ago but was a bit weary of covering all the nuts/bolts that are under there. Is it a pain to remove/scrape off if I need to remove something?. I took the old stuff off with a Dremel grinding disc (hadn't discovered the wonders of the angle grinder yet) it took me 7 hours. Only after I marvelled that the NCT (MOT) guy had sensed such a tiny (<1 sq cm) rust-hole under so much gick, did I realise which side 'nearside' was. I'd like to think I've come along a bit since then. NCT guy wasn't a Jedi, there was a MUCH bigger bit of sill rusted through on the correct side, my Puma is now approx 0.1% Hiace.

Actually, would you believe I have a tin of that in the garage already, the daily driver was suffering from rust. Good call, horrible goop if I remember correctly, but at 20% the cost of the plastidip a bargain.

Yeah, the moment I unrolled it I got the feeling I was in for a few hours frustrating work. It is matt black, and I chose quite a thick vinyl so it wouldn't rip too readily. It did tear in two places as I was working it, but a small patch underneath did the trick.
The stuff has air holes, so you can work out bubbles, but creases you're stuck with once they form.
Still thinking of trying plastidip for the underside; once I have all my rivets in, might see if I can chuck it up on a lift and spray the underside. I went out for a go in RTR's Race Rocket, and while it was great craic, the sound of sound chips striking the underbody was disconcerting, Wifey would get in once and never again! Rubber matting is an option, but if you could spray it on, might be worth a look. And if it doesn't work, no one can see it :-)

Wrapping the floorVinyl, seems like a great idea, but a bot of a hoor to work with. No matter how many times I pulled it up and heated it, I couldn't get the wrinkles out. Any kind of excess bunches up badly, doubt I could make it go around the cycle wings. Definitely not vinyl-wrapping the body panels now! SIlver lining though, the worst parts will be under the tubular sections and beneath the fuel tank.

Omex 600 with loom starting at £495. Not a super-bargain, but with some small mods it'd fit a Zetec, would need a map, but we're starting a map-sharing area on there, if we're let. I bagged a race-spec Omex 600 loom that had been fitted to a Vauxhall there yesterday for £80, absolutely delighted. Going to spend a few hours with a multi-meter and move some around the Omex plug to suit the 710 it's going into, but still far cheaper and less hassle than buying all the plugs and attaching themself. Top tip, set up a couple of searches on Ebay with price limits; I had 3 running for a couple of weeks, 'Omex loom' 'Omex wiring' and 'Omex harness', all < £140. Great way to snag a bargain, and you won't miss anything.

well you did ok at 400 there then Absolutely, if Omex give it a clean bill of health and a firmware update (and hopefully an ST170 base map) I'll be thrilled, absolute steal at that price, and as you said, if it doesn't work out I can likely sell it for what I paid for it. Shopping around for wiring and ITBs now :-)

If it has a shift light, or an rpm derived output, it will run VvT of the focus. It can be made to. It's not like a multiple stage VvT on the st170 by memory, simply on/off ?? The manual certainly suggests it supports VTEC and VVT But not quite as hopefully:

Hmm, Omex seem skeptical
Feck. Still, you're were spot on with the test + update, quoted me very small money to do this.

ring them, I posted mine to them. they ran a full bench diagnostic, completely updated the software to the 710 and sent it back. complete bill around 54 quid. you just missed a full loom on ebay for about 75 quid last week too. Definitely will. Might be worth liaising on fleabay auctions, be a shame to outbid each other :-) I'm Simon_loves_gadgets (I'll appear as s****s 271 on private auctions).

that is the 700 I know because I have it. I sent it to omex and its now a 710 in a 700 box for a simple 50 quid software upgrade. contact omex and ask if its possible to add vvt software. they are helpful the ecu is 1200 quid in the silver newer box. im not having that it wont support vvt........... Hmm, about-turn on that, I've only gone and had it. God I hope it's alright. I've put a mail through Omex to ask them about the VVT, though that was based on it being a 710 rather than 700 series. Seems the manual is the same. Off-topic, but what's the absolute quickest way to see if it powers up? Will a battery + ECU + serial cable be enough or do I need to wire up a whole loom do you think?
