Expansion tank should be just fine, if you're not running FI then you can happily run 'sans' expansion tank and just run the tube to atmosphere aka the ground, especially in an Exo car with more air cooling than factory/production cars. Looks fine to me

I am not getting into a back & forward with Hammy, as I understand, he is not a mechanic, every car manufacturer has their expansion tanks above the head, so surely they must know what they are doing ? It's your car mate, all I want is for your car to be everything that you want it to be, and an un reliable car is not what's needed. My information is supported by various manufacturers & internet information. Some of which can be found here : www.rhocar.org/index.php?/forums/topic/46039-header-tanks-expansion-tank-plumbing/I prefer to be constructive rather than randomly comment on items. My intentions are good & well backed up. I am only trying to help you mate. As far as the motor trade is aware, this is the industry standard. My one son is in a second year apprenticeship with a Ford dealership, & he says the same thing.

MX5 Heaven workshop is a good source of information, check with the pro's or call Bryan at MX5 Parts. Cooling of an MX5 has never been an issue in standard trim, I have had an MX5 for years !

I think we may be confusing the expansion tank with a header tank. Most modern vehicles have a pressurised header tank that is the fill point for the cooling system - this has to be the highest point. The MX5 has the pressure cap on the radiator and an expansion tank that captures the extra coolant when hot and allows it to be drawn back into the rad as it cools. As long as the the line from the rad is positioned at the bottom of the tank it should not matter where it is positioned.

Hi, my understanding was also that the expansion tank could go just about anywhere on an NA/NB MX5. I’ve moved it up about 2” now, but that’s just aid filling really.

The weather is improving now so I thought I’d get on with the electrics... almost! Had to make a wiring tray first. I could have made one from aluminium sheet, but I wanted the flexibility to move stuff around and didn’t want to drill holes all over it and end up with only half used. The solution was to buy 3m of galvanised 150mm cable tray, chop it up and weld it back together.

I cut a few holes in the (now painted) wiring tray on the firewall side for the engine loom and also a large square hole for the fuse box to slot into. It all just about fits but I need to hack out the airbag sensor and abs wires...

I have an unlabelled single wire plug coming from my starter loom. It has a white plastic reinforcement straw taped to it. It’s not the one that plugs into the starter, that’s already on. Car is an Exocet, donor was a 1999 Mk2 MX5 with abs, no a/c.

That part of the wiring loom is still exposed On my 2003 1.8. Will have a look this evening and let you know if I have the same wire and what it is plugged in to.

Sorry no luck. I don’t see to have that cable? Perhaps not on the MK2.5?
