Well, I've tried every socket/wrench combination I have; I've scrubbed with a wire brush; overdosed on WD40; considered buying a reciprocating hacksaw; and tried a nut splitter instead, and still they won't budge! I've heard heat can help, but I've only got a little butane torch, and I doubt that will do the trick. I powered the nut splitter as deep as I could, but no satisfying crack was heard, and as you can see below, neither nut seems inclined to give in yet, so I'm at a complete loss. Not even sure if a reciprocating hacksaw would work in either chopping off the nuts, or carving out the entire engine bulkhead mount. Things are so bad, I've given up and going shopping with the wife, so any help would be appreciated!!

Hey Fin, have you tried another penetrating fluid other than WD40 ? In my personal experience, WD40 doesn't do much. I much prefer Kona Kroil.

You've no doubt got these covered but just in case any help... Even a blowtorch will effect expansion/contraction and might help crack a tough nut. Patience is also a virtue - whilst soaking with insert-fluid-of-choice each day for a week whilst progressing other tasks. Not sure what leverage you've tried but they'll certainly need a breaker bar - if you can still get a spanner on those. In my build thread Stuart noted ... "Guys, if you have a rusty MX5 just get one of these things, with 460Nm of force the bolts and nuts fly off with or without oil. Amazing, I have just stripped the rustyest MX5 in creation and it just blew the rust out of the way. A great investment at £60. Forget your battery versions, no comparison. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Clarke-Electric-Impact-Wrench-CEW1000-/200666941284?pt=UK_Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&hash=item2eb8ae8764#ht_553wt_904

Has previously looked at the battery version, but can see the nut staying still and me spinning round like Wile E. Coyote! More importantly, do you think there is room for this gun to get at these 14 bolts?

Yep, had exactly the same issues and when i thought all was going well, 2 of the rear bolts snapped off leaving half in the chassis and half in the subframe, in the end i had to grind them out and then just lift and hope the weight snapped it off, luckily it did!

Thanks Shane, I'll try that. Engineer mate of my son also recommended 50/50 ATF & Acetone homebrew!

Or the sledge hammer approach, on mine with the ones that were part of the mx5 shell I put a reciprocating saw through them. 10 second job.

Clarke Electric Impact Wrench, or reciprocating hacksaw, or Multi-Tool saw. So much for no specialist tools required! Wonder where you buy Acetone........

Fin, you clearly have some very corroded bolts. The nut splitter won't have helped as this may have deformed the thread. Heat is a wonderful thing. Heat the huts (trying to advoid the bolt) to just just before they are a dull red making sure the fuel lines are a safe distance away!!!
The differential expansion should work. Allow to Cool then try with a breaker bar. If not repeat and whilst hot apply the breaker bar.
For heat try one of these ROTHENBERGER SUPER FIRE TORCH & MAP PRO GAS CYLINDER (92347) from screwfix.
Good luck.

There is no way you will get those nuts of without a breaker bar, im a reasonably strong person and a breaker bar without a ratchet end killed me off, it must taken 50 pulls of the bar (quarter turn each time) to get every nut off and every pull was a very hard.

Down to Machine Mart this morning, and eventually decided on the reciprocal hacksaw with some longer metal blades, as I didn't think I'd be able to get the Impact Wrench into position behind the spring for the front 2. Was all set for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, when I thought I'd give it one more go with the sockets. Lo and behold, I've now managed to get 12 off, leaving only the two at the front offside. I agree, it has been hard work, short and very hard pulls, but not skinned knuckles (yet), and won't be needing to hit the gym this week. Might get my son to try a fresh pull on these two, then might even be able to get my money back from MM as it's still unopened Also found out today that I'd actually sheered the drive bolt on the nut splitter! Romac swapped it for another longer 19mm spanner as I'd only bought it yesterday!
