That'll teach me for gloating about how easy my strip down has been! Both rear lower arm bolts were bent and took more than a little gentle persuation to get out. I hope the arms aren't bent as well! ... Then I flipped the rear subframe to remove the diff and the two 12mm bolts holding the diff bushes are rusted. One on each side sheared off, one on each side rounded. I guess I will have to drill these out and replace with bolts.

damn, spoke too soon! And that on a '98 too. Surprises me, I've not come across any rust even on '89 models so far. Hopefully that's the last of it...

Hi all... Despite my earlier decision to stick to standard suspension I went out and bought Tein coilovers ( www.tein.com/products/street_advance.html). The cost of re-building the original Bilsteins vs new stock shocks vs the Teins was such that for a little more outlay I had adjustable height and dampening...so what the hay, its done. My question is: Does anybody else have these or similar installed and am I likely to need the top hat spacers (for example exomotive.com/store/exocet-shock-spacer-mounts/) I have seen in photos etc? It can take a while to get things delivered down to our neck of the woods so would like to order early if needed? TIA.

I'd 100% get the spacers. Truthfully I'm surprised they don't integrate them into the chassis as-is.

I've seen the banana plates that have been used as an alternative and I shudder to think what our certifiers here in NZ would think of hacking into the control arm like that...I'm not an engineer though so maybe its ok? Is Exomotive the only place selling these spacers now? I cant seem to find them on FM and 949Racing don't sell them...

Exomotive are the only place I know of selling them. See if you can get them sent to you. The other option is to see if Tom (or the new owner) can hook you up

I don't think the would pass cert without a design analysis. LVVTA don't allow mods to standard type approved suspension components. Out of curiosity what have the other Exocets done about this issue over here?

Picked up powdercoated suspension and subframes today...woop woop, came out pretty well! Thanks to HPC coatings in Auckland! Brake calipers hit with caliper paint too Just have to finish wire brush assault on diff then paint, fit new bushes and start putting it back together!

Hey Adam, looking very bling! Coming to together nicely now. Regarding the upper front wishbone Out of curiosity what have the other Exocets done about this issue over here? I've found that the standard shocks or MX5 Bilsteins have either just cleared the back of the A-arm cross piece, or fouled it by a hair's breadth. In any case, on each of the 3 Exocets I've built, I've tweaked the cross-piece in the vice to give me about 5 mm space. A hard tube about 15 mm diameter provides a nice radius and a good point load to dent the arm nicely. For ride height, I have had additional grooves machined into the body of the Bilstein shock absorber, that the circlip sits in which supports the spring seat. Raising the spring seat a little with the Tein springs we use, provides a fraction more pre-tension and a good ride height and suspension travel. Typically sit about 120 mm to the lower edge of the chassis.

Does anyone have the torque number for the diff to rear subframe mounting bolts (the diff bushing mount bolts)? Cant seem to find the number. TIA.
