Hi All I have posted before, started a door debate a while ago which MEV has now properly addressed with the new body on offer. I bought and stripped my MX5 a few months ago and have finally put my order in. I have a build diary which is here marksreplicar.weebly.com/ but will try to keep my diary and this thread updated. I know how useful these build threads are when looking for a solution.

This is my donor, fresh from ebay. Took it out for a little spin round the lanes and it is a very useable little car.

Did you cut the chassis and vin details off prior to scrapping it just saw they are still on when on your trailer. Think they maybe needed for dvla to get an age related plate.

The details are needed not the actual plates but can be easier if the chassis not officially scrapped yet...I haven't scrapped my chassis but all that is left is a 2 X 6 inch plate

Hi John, looks like the collective has already answered the vin plate question, this is my second kit build and I followed the advice from other forums and kept the vin plate for the first build but it was never required. Keeping the donor on sorn and letting DVLA scrap it with the new car registration was the easiest route.
The kit was ordered in the new green that Stuart is doing, he is also getting the nose painted with the yellow lipstick for me. The metalwork will be grey.
I was looking to do the build in two parts. Firstly build an IVA passing car, MX5 seats, MX5 Steering wheel etc and then going back into the garage to rework the look of the car to be more in line with the Aston Martin inspiration. Which raises a question I have, what are people thinking of using for the steering wheel? There is a very nice (and expensive) mota-lita wheel available which is an Aston copy but has anyone found anything better?

I think there are differences between the wheels I don't know what it is but I do remember looking at this a while ago and coming to the conclusion a Mk1 wheel won't fit the Mk2 column (I have a nice wooden nardi wheel on my mk1 I was going to steal but something made me think otherwise) no oe Mk2 wheels suit in my opinion. I'm prob going to have to save up some pennies for a moto-lita one long term. If a mk1 wheel could be worked to fit with a boss of some kind maybe? This could bring the wheel a bit too close though.

Westie - ditto I've ordered new green, yellow lipstick and light aircraft grey chassis. Hopefully collect tomorrow.
Re IVA process mine is two stage build also. Don't think wooden wheels get through the IVA test.

When I put my Westfield through IVA I had a mark2.5 donor with airbags so I used a mark1 steering wheel but I can't remember what I had to do to fit it, I definately added a collapsible boss. Thinking about it I have a mark1 wheel and a mark2 column in the garage so I should go and check, I think my biggest issue was with the clockspring arrangment which needed some work. If you can get an undrilled MX5 boss that should improve the choice for steering wheels.
I am expecting the car I IVA to look a bit shabby with mx5 parts on display but I made changes from standard on the Westfield which caused me issues on the test. Building to IVA is the way to go.
I am based near to Northwich if anyone is close.
