So it's been a while since I have been on. I put 1200miles on the car over the summer with zero issues. Car has been great and soo much fun to drive. The car was plenty fast but I was not satisfied. I decided I was going to up the power over the winter by adding a turbo to my setup.
Since I am using a 5 speed I only planned to run max 5psi. Anyone familiar with the J Series knows they respond super well to boost. Some guys with civics are in the 400whp range running only 8psi.
I had a spare motor that I used to try to fit the turbo and mock up everything. I went with a Holset Hy35. They are cheap and reliable. I picked this one up for $200.
I knew because of the restricted space it wouldn't be easy to fit a turbo in the engine area. After playing around I found a way for it to fit. The down side was I would have to run a Civic radiator which is half the size of the stock Miata radiator. Having followed J series Civic builds I knew it should work ok. I found a thick 3 core radiator with a shroud and high volume fan.
I moved the radiator inlet/outlet to the left side of the radiator so I could route my hose opposet of the turbo hot side.
Next I made the hot side of the turbo using 304 stainless tube. I kept the stock exhaust manifolds with plans of building headers later.
After about 6hrs of work and a couple alterations I got hot side done. And the turbo in place. I made the decision to skip the intercooler for now since I was only running 5psi. If I have decide to run more boost or my IATs are too high I will run a water/meth setup.
I ran 3" exhaust from the turbo back to a vibrant bottle resonator and then to a vibrant ultra quiet resonator. It sounds amazing.
The setups total cost was $600. It should put down around 350ish Whp. As soon as the weather allowed I took the car out for a drive. It was quickly apparent that the expletive deleted 205s I had were not wide enough so I bought a set of 225/50r15 R888s.
I'll just say the car is stupid fast. Next in line will be a tune and getting it to the track. I'll be sure to update more often from here on out.
