I have read that when removing the PPF to take care not to remove the spacers as removing the spacers will destroy the PFF. Is this common knowledge? I had no idea until I read about it. Any posts about your experiences would be welcomed. Robert PS Sorry the picture is rotated. It is not rotated in Photobucket, but went landscape when posted here.

They say your not supposed to because chances are that you will torque the PPF trying to remove it from the diff if you don't do it right. Have you bought Keith Tanner's manual about the miata? The guy who works for Flyin miata. For you, it would be worth every dollar. He goes over everything in that book that you will need to know. Step by step with pictures. Including the proper way to remove the PPF. It's kinda like a better version of the Chilton manuals. www.flyinmiata.com/index.php?dept=26

I have Tanner's book on performance projects and pages 68-69 he mentions removing the spacer and then placing back in its proper location. I suspect I may have misunderstood the Grainger book Grainger writes about the rear "upper" spacer. Heck if I can find an "upper" spacer in the rear. :-) www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1845840909/miatanetMazda MX-5 Miata 1.8: Enthuasiast Workshop Manual (Enthusiast's Workshop Manual Series) The Tanner book tells me how to remove the the rear spacer. Color me a little confused. Sorry if I have confused anyone else. Robert

Robert.. The spacer you are talking about is the one that the 2 nuts on top of the PPF is pressed into.. Nuts from top of PPF through PPF into spacer.. These nuts are pressed in, if they are remover, they may turn/spin when put back in place.. When you tightening the long bolts.. I have hammered them back in and then staked them to the PPF in 4 places to aid in not spinning. There is also a sleeve that is pushed up into the spacer by the front bolt that has to be pulled down if it doesn't slide down when bolt is removed.. (bolt sleeve in your pic).. After removing the front bolt you can screw a m14x1.5 bolt up into the sleeve and pull it down. wire brush and spray it with Blaster first. After getting it down and released from the spacer turn bolt out of it. If sleeve spins there is a threaded hole in the block it went into were you can screw a m6x1 bolt to hold the sleeve from turning while you remove the m14x1.5 bolt. remove holding bolt when done so sleeve will go up when PPF is installed onto the diff.

Sorry to bump a necro thread but didn't want to start a new one on this same topic. I just took mine apart to get ready for powder.
Would I just send the entire unit ( with the upper rear space still intact ) to the powder coater ?

Good job on recycling that man, too many start new threads when the topic is already covered.

Interesting, I've just replaced the diff on my car and the spacer fell out...popped it back in, torque'd everything back together, then hammered it hard round the track for a few hours....
Should I be dead?

Yeah mine also came completely off when removing the ppf but it seems to have gone back in ok... I can't see the problem with taking it apart as long as the plugs don't spin when tightening. My thoughts are it started life on the assembly line as separate parts....
