I'm struggling with deciding how to mount my 17" Kirkey also. There's a detailed write-up on the topic on this blog: conflictedracer.wordpress.com/Also, Warren posted a diagram of his method on the GRM thread a few months back. My first seat I tried is an Ultra Shield Spec Miata 18. It just does not want to fit. I am considering seriously just ordering some bottom mount Tuner seats. They will be more comfortable for long drives. I plan on having my build for a weekend driver and the most exciting driving I plan on doing is some Autocross and DE events. Neither require 5/6 point belts or certified fixed race seat. The only wheel to wheel action I ever plan on seeing is on I-95, lol. Here is the Ultra Shield seat, compare this to your Kirkey. www.ultrashieldrace.com/catalog/Road-Race-Seats/Standard-Road-Race-Seats/Spec-Miata-Seat/161Thanks for the write-up this is very informative. John

Oh yeah, I'm not a miata expert but from what I've read, 18 is pushing it on that platform. 17 seems to be the maximum allowable without major surgery - and getting 17 to fit can be non-trivial.
My car is going to be a dedicated HPDE car. I don't pay much attention to what DE organizers require. Rolling over a triple digit speed hurts as much during a DE as it does in a wheel to wheel race. So I want a fixed seat with back attachment to the frame, 6-point, HANS. And maybe even nets or arm restraints. That blogger Joel Karns seems to be a great source of info on that topic since he is an experienced w2w racer.

Taking suggestions for seat mounting options. I am looking to install aftermarket seats, having trouble coming up with a suitable bracket for the seat to be mounted on. Any ideas? What did you do for your seats? photos? Thanks, Here is what I have come up with so far. The issue is the seat sliders are going to hit the seat belt clips. any ideas, suggestions please. I am installing 4 point seat belts. Has anyone else had this problem?

I was under the assumption that we wouldn't have to fabricate anything. I thought factory seats would bolt right on. I guess not. That's unfortunate. I've seen one or 2 people making tabs for the factory location to allow for factory seats or aftermarket seats that bolt on with mounts made for a miata.

I am trying to install seats that are bigger than factory. My issue is the aftermarket adapter brackets for replacement seats would still need to be modified for my application the brackets are $280 for the pair. here is the Planted Seat Bracket link. www.amazon.com/dp/B0085XVIQ4/ref=dra_a_rv_lb_ho_it_P1700_1000?tag=dradisplay-20&ascsubtag=4a251a2ef9bbf4ccc35f97aba2c9cbdaThe spacing of the floor bars is exactly measured for factory seats. From what I understand you just have to bend the tabs from the factory seat rails and drill and mount. So far I have found minimal items that needed fabricating. All I have used is a drill and a dremel tool.

Can't you attach the seat belts to the mounting tabs without that large "O" anchor screw. Get some brackets that are used to attach belts to the floor. Check out ebay under seat belt anchors.. like eBay item number: 130794680731

Useful information, thank you, I'll have to look more into it but I anticipate my kit to still be 5 months out. Been a bit over 1 month since my order was placed. Lots of mental prep work and trying to piece together a few game plans. Transporting to track and hauling vehicle right now seem to be consuming my time the most. As far as the seats go, I've currently got a bracket from garagestar for a bucket seat. Take a look at those and see if it my suite your needs. Unfortunately My miata isn't 100% drivable or i would drive down into key largo to let you sit in the seat and see if it's something you like.

Hey john, soooo, I've been looking into the trailer situation... My neighbor has a 6x12 enclosed trailer. WARNING! before you buy a trailer, know what your exact wheel setup will be! The stance width changes depending on the wheels you have on the car. With my 15x8 +0 wheels, which is what exomotive recommends, a 6x12 trailer will NOT work. The measured door opening is 5' 3", interior room is 5' 9". So i changed on to my cheap crap wheels and i was able to get the front stance width just shy of 5' 3". Im in the process of measuring the rear. If my rear stance width is just shy of 5' 3" i will probably end up buying the trailer from my neighbor. with my 15x8+0 wheels the stance width came up to about 5'9". .::UPDATE::. Rear stance width with my crap wheels is 5'4.5" =( 7x12 trailer it's going to have to be.

How are progressing? Here in Tampa, I've been stonewalled by an electrical issue. Whole thing is dead as a door knob except lights and other accessories. I'm afraid that when I stripped off an aftermarket security system there may have been a broken connection. Big big problem! I hope you are doing better. I was hoping for a test run soon.

That sucks, man. Have you traced each wire to the ECU? The '01-'02 Miatas have the immobilizer.

Progress is going slow on my end. I have taken on a major rebuild job at work and have been working 60 hours a week since July. I recently dropped my shell and PPF off at Treasure Coast Miata. Wesley Saunders is building the engine for me and preparing the rollerskate. I plan on taking my frame up to him in two weeks. Wesley is going to mount the frame and align the suspension for me and then I will finish the balance of the build at home. I know having Wesley do the heavy work is a shortcut but Treasure Coast Miata builds some of the best Spec Miata Racers in the south. Sorry to hear about your wiring nightmare. Who made the aftermarket alarm? Most of them just bypass the car's own start interlock and use the one in the alarm's brain box. If it was an UNGO or Clifford remember they sometimes break the connection on the ground side not the hot side. Also look at the clutch pedal start switch. I had the bumper fall off mine while I was driving my miata I couldn't start the car at all the next day.
