Hi guys, looking for some help please. My Sonic was running beautifully for 500 miles or so then on the trip to Skegness it just stopped. The recovery man diagnosed a faulty coil pack as there was no spark but he said the LT feed was ok. I replaced the coil pack and the fault is the same. I've checked the following Engine turns over fine No HT at spark plug Fuel OK Coil pack changed Pin 2 of the coil pack has 12v from Ign Pin 1 of the coil pack to Pin 58 ECU continuity is good Pin 3 of the coil pack to Pin 59 ECU continuity is good Crankshaft sensor pin 1 to ECU pin 55 continuity good Crankshaft sensor pin 2 to ECU pin 56 continuity is good PATS system appears ok because with PATS disconnected the engine won't turn over at all No engine fault codes on diagnostic connector Fault code reader "sees" the ECU All other electrical circuits ok, no fuses or relays failed I realise these tests are not dynamic tests but unless the ECU has died in which case the fault code reader wouldn't see it and the continuity is good? ?? any ideas please

Hi mate, when you say you have a Focus manual, which manual do you mean! It's a 2.0l blacktop standard ECU.

I have a Haynes Ford Focus manual 1998 to 2001 it says it covers 2.0 petrol engines

Hi Dave,
If I understand this correctly,
The LT supply to the coil pack is good. and the coil pack is new. So all that remains is for the ECU to trigger the coil pack.
From what I have read a while back, the stock ECUs can fail but fail on one or other of the coil pack triggers so you would normally expect to lose one bank ( 2 cylinders ) and still have a limping but utterly powerless lump barely able to keep itself going.
From your description you have lost spark to all cylinders.
Scenario A - Did it stop while driving along with the key in the ignition ? Or Scenario B - did it run fine , and then fail to restart after parking up and switching off ?
If scenario B applies, I'd check the wiring to the transponder ring on the ignition.
My logic is , assuming that your ECU is fine, that your ecu has determined not to trigger the coil pack. One factor in this is the ECU failing to read the key transponder ring. This situation would be consistent with scenario B above. Other factors include the crankshaft sensor that you have already mentioned checking , that failing would be consistent with Scenario A above.
Good luck

Hi Guy, I'm leaning toward the ECU as the engine was running and just stopped, I didn't stop it with the key. I am not sure how to check the ECU trigger to the coil pack, I believe it's a negative pulse but not certain. I've pretty much discounted the PATS as without PATS the engine won't even turn over. Anyone recommend a good ECU tester?

Thanks guys but wouldn't we need a matching key / PATS module?
