Hi there. Me and Sam, my 15 year old son, are going to build an Exocet. Will try and post updates on here and will ask LOADS of questions. We got our MX 5 off Ebay for £310 but I have a problem.................. Its such a nice car and in such good condition and we got to RIP it apart!!!!! Engine is sound, no rot, 7 months MOT!! Bloody good for a car 22 years old! Anyway, got to get on with it. Need to sell as much as poss to finance the project. Will of course use Ebay but anywhere else? Car in garage until the new year and got rid of some of the parts which will make me feel better about pulling it apart!!!!!! By the way, great forum. Mick in Norfolk

Why not re-sell the donor at a profit and buy a different donor?

I listed a few things on eBay and also mentioned in all the ads that I was stripping an MX5. I was surprised over the following week how many people were contacting me for various parts which saved me the effort of listing every single item.

Strip the car down to component level.
Label clearly, so you can quickly identify for shipment.
Take nice pictures.
'Watch' items on eBay, use the parts that sell the highest as the basis of your advert.
Choose your words carefully, maximise use of the title text block so you appear in as many searches as possible.
Tell your potential customers that you are not a dealer, but stripping the car for a kit car build.
If eBay allow, add your phone number and email address in the description.

So, I will get more dosh this way rather than selling a door with everything still included? Is it really worth the hassle? Would someone not want to by a complete door with working electric window etc etc ?

Your thread titlle says on a budget, we sold our car parts for £4,100. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! Would love to get half of that! But the car is a tad older so might be a struggle. Will start stripping down in the new year. Started getting tools for christamas presents. 2 ton trolley jack came today!!!

I think you have a choice that only you can make. Take your time stripping and labelling and then storing and maximise you return (tlight seems to have nailed it). Or leave stuff as either complete components (eg doors) or let it go to the scrap yard. Less money but also less hassle and no storage issues.
One thing that will save you a small penny is saving the nuts and bolts you remove. If they are half decent keep them. The majority of ours were mint still with a good un-corroded cadmium coating. M6 and M8's being the common sizes.

We started in a small way today. Sold the front wings so need to take them off!!,
Need a little advice.
Need to get loads of tools but what do you recommend for breaking joints like rusted nut connecting a wing to the plastic bumper. Some just snap. Other require........
hammer and chisel ? small grinder ?
Cannot believe this little buggers can be such a pain. Do not want to damage the wings?

If they break so be it there is only 1 stud that hold on the wings that is on the under side forward.. remove the bumper to get to it.. there is also one nut under fender by the side repeater lamp.. must remove inner plastic to see it..10mm nut.. As for tools couple of different weight hammers.. A good 6 point socket set 3/8 drive (12 point tend to round nuts that are rusted)..1/2" drive sockets as needed or a set 6 point.. A good breaker bar 1/2" drive and a 1/2 to 3/8 adapter and a piece of pipe to make it longer.. Short and long ratchet wrenches. Extensions.. Good set of screwdrivers.. Good Combo Wrench set 8mm>19mm.. 1 1/8" 6 point socket for rear axle nuts 1/2" drive.. Multi meter.. wire brush.. rust spray.. labels.. permanent marker fine pen to label with.. Jack and stands.. 4' of 1" tubing or 2x2 wood to make 4 A arms braces with.. How are you going to raise the body, engine hoist or block and tackle.. Later elec grinders and brushes. I am going to send you a message about some parts..

Don't get your hopes up about making good money on selling MX parts. The market is rock bottom now. I ended up giving stuff away. There are so many people selling stuff the prices are awful. Nice aftermarket bits and extras will sell but standard stuff is very cheap. I still have a garage with loads of stuff in it. I needed space so gave my seats and doors away.
