Not being funny. But why?
There's much better options out there. Is it the V6 you're looking at?

yes its the 2litre v6 manual with 180bhp...ever since i saw the rocket ive wanted to build one but money was a problem at the time. i bought the fto last year to do up but ide rather still build a rocket,so would it be a waste of time thinking i could use the engine?

Hi Neil,
if you have the prerequisite engineering skills you can do pretty much anything with a Rocket but I would suggest that you give us call on 0115 9780677 during business hours to talk through the options.

Hi guys.
I have been running a couple of posts in the general section but need some help with engine choice for my rocket.
I would really like to get a 2.0 litre, and have the chance of a ghia (v Reg) for £700. I should be able to harvest everything I need from this car, but I'm not sure about the gearbox. If it has an IB5 then i should be ok but could it have an MTX-75, will this fit in the rocket.
Cheers.

The 2ltr will have the mtx box which I think is too large to fit in. You need an ib5 box from a 1.8ltr plus the flywheel, driveshafts and cables.

I can't help think that some Jap metal might be rather good in one of these.
I run a 3.0 all alloy 1MZFE in my Mr2 Roadster and that fairly shifts. With half the weight it would positively fly.

i have a 3sgte engine from an mr2 for sale in the 'for sale section' if anyone is interested :-) obviously anyting other than a focus engine will need modification to the engine mounts either by rtr or yourself but at least the 3sgte engine with an mr2 gearbox with be in the same layout as it was in the mr2 it came from so gearshift cables will be the same way round etc... just a thought :-)

I've made a few enquiries about measurements but still haven't managed to aquire details of available depth and width of the engine bay on the rocket. I want to fit a Saab 2.3 (or 2.0) Turbo engine in place of the standard Ford engine. I am guessing the Saab engine weighs a bit more than the Ford one too, anyone have an approx weight of the Ford eng and box?

Mine has the bog std focus 1.8 and its got plenty of poke... don't forget that the whole thing weighs less than 500kgs! You also have to consider the amount of weight that you want over the rear axle - understeer could be a major issue!

Understeer had crossed my mind .... bit of lead in the front might be required to compensate though... I know of a 4 wheel Grinnall with a 2.3 engine in same position as a Rocket making 420hp and whilst during the build I reckoned it would need wheelie bars to keep the front on the ground, it turned out to handle rather well on the track.

Problem with the FTO engine is they're big and heavy, I remember trying to do anything under the bonnet on mine! Plus it's a 6 cylinder. If it was power you were after why not look at the block from a DC2. 1.8 and 200ish bhp and available for the same cash as you'd get selling the GR engine. Like RTR said, anything is possible... if your pockets are deep enough, but having that weight out back might make for interesting handling.

The getrag gearbox commonly used with the ST170 engine is 45kg, and the 2.0 Zetec engine is in the region of 100kg, though I couldn't tell you precisely how heavy, it's a LOT heavier than the 1.7 Zetec-SE I pulled out of my old Puma. This crate engine's shipping weight is 370lb, which is 170Kg, I'd imagine that includes a lot of crate! I'll measure the engine bay when I'm down in the garage next (Sunday).
