I have been working mine for about 5 years, on and off. I like it since it is a relaxing hobby. When I started I used to drink and end up sleeping on the floor next to the car, now I just smoke cigars and it helps keep me awake.

Hey Chris, great updates. Like the grey/blue combo. How did you go about mixing/joining the Seat and Ford bits? ie drive shafts etc.

Hi
The shafts had to be made from new i bought some focus shafts but they are a solid bar and the leon is a tube so would marry up. inter coolers we a pain to find somewhere and something to fit. The gear shift goes all the way around the front. the exhaust is very tight too i ran the car last night with the cover on and there are a few areas that get very hot so im going to make some holes and or more heat shield. there are a lot of hoses on it too for the oil cooler, turbo water pump and turbo pipes so its getting quite cramped in there. apart from that its been a breeze :-)

I always thought that cars with HID lights had to have self leveling lamps, and a wash system.....neither of which is going to happen on a Sonic! I could be wrong (....but I've just read the relevant portion of the IVA manual to see if I'm right). Personally I wouldn't risk it pre-IVA. Might be worthwhile before it gets to its first MOT.....but don't be too surprised if it fails. Less of an issue at MOT time - not quite the same expense involved, and arguably less likely to be spotted (rightly or wrongly.....!).

I followed the link and then dug into their other lights and found this -
surely something that complies for MOT complies for IVA?

"Vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) or LED dipped beam headlamps may be fitted with headlamp washers and a suspension or headlamp self levelling system. Where such systems are fitted, they must work;" That sounds promising I agree.....and it would make sense for IVA and MOT standards to be aligned. Ah.....maybe I've spotted the flaw......"sense". There does appear to be lots of differing opinion about on t'internet, and I didn't get the clarity I thought I'd get from the IVA manual. Maybe it's worth asking VOSA themselves? I have to say that my tintop which has HIDs and washers etc. passed several MOTs without the washers working; they are working now, but on previous tests they weren't even looked at. Martin

I understand the leveler bit (I think) assume it is to ensure superb bright lights don't dazzle though misalignment.
However what's with the washers?

A little update on the lights, if they are projector type units which mine are they should be fine aparently the HID kits fitted to normal headlights have been made illegal this is a mechanic friend who knows a guy who does MOTS.

Cheers Buildityourself.
got my v5 yesterday so hopefully take it out this weekend ill post all up to this point in the coming week
No it failed on the following, test took 3 hours they took an hour to do the paperwork
Design weights: the leon engine is heavier these it could have been done on the day but the car had to go back Rear fog too low. Suspension settled 10mm too low i didnt realise! further travel no handbrake: tightened adjuster nut on it. Steering stops needed to be raduised more as did the roll bar supports bars i fitted trim to both And horn spades need covering crimps exposed.
i need bigger mirrors they did pass the advised the vision is not great.
My worry was it failing on the following: lights but they set them and where happy they did mention they where HIDs. Seat belts are a pain as the seats are pretty big but once set theres no real need to adjust them
ive got the following to fit
rear and front wings make some inter cooler vents fit windscreen,
following the rolling road visit the wastage leaks so it make down on power at 209 bhp also needs a new fuel pump and reg the st170 ones not quite got enough top end.
the guys that did it where very helpful on the day, A different chap re tested it he took it for a spin i was a little worried as hes was a lot taller than me but he said its all good and passed it retest 20 mins booked in for a hour.
