FYI.. A 185 tire should mount on a 4 1/2" to 6" rim.. Going wider you may pop the tire bead off the rim with aggressive driving..

I fitted 5.5j wheels so I could get reasonably priced historic tires, should make the handling fun as well

gwnwar, emailed a dealer before I posted but no answer, just thought Marmot0 might know.
Having done a little more research it would appear that Dunlop have done the necessary and got tyres legal for road use 'E' marked but only for 16" diameter and above so I am back to square 1.

I have no idea about those particular tyres. Take a look here www.vintagetyres.com/ to see the sizes readily available. I went for 185 80/ r15 because of the large choice I am sure sure this profile it would fit on a 7j wheel, maybe a good idea to email a manufacturer and check, one thing I am worried about is the gearing and acceleration so I will let you know how I get on whereby they arrive.

Well it turns out that the Vredestein 185 / 80 R15 proved way too large, I reckon a 60 profile would be better, so I now have 4 brand new tyres up for grabs if anyone is interested. Thanks

marmot0 whats the problem, do they catch the bodywork? As before I cant fit 185's to my rims otherwise i'd be up for them.

The tyres make the car look out of proportion, I think 65 profile would suit better

Look period to me but realise I might be better with 70 profile if I go 205 or 215. Have you tried offering up to side of car?

Yes I even fitted one to a wheel did not take any photos though. I think the issue is that the arches have been designed around the standard mx5 wheels so anything larger looks a bit strange. Bear in mind that this profile is 14 Cm larger in diameter than a 195 50 r15.

marmot0 Just been looking at the wheels on the red demonstrator (on front cover of TKC Sept/Oct2014) and these look about right in relation to the wheel arches (but probably lower profile than I'll use) worth giving Stuart Mills a call re tyre/wheel sizes he used.
