Removing the rear axels from the diff ended up being as easy as everyone said. I have removed everything from the rear end. It looks like spermatozoid now Next weekend, I plan to take off the ppf, take off the bell housing and put the engine on the stand to do some maintenance and take care of the oil leak. After that, sand blasting, priming and painting. Will have to see if I can put things back together.

Keep up the good work. The fun bit of putting all the nice shiny bits back together isn't to far away now.

So I have hit the bottom. Miata is officially no more. This is what it looks like now: I will be out of town for the next 3 weeks . When I come back, I will change the oil seals on the oils pan and the crankshaft (front and back), replace the clutch. Clean, the engine, transmission cover, and PPF and start to put things back together. I am still over a month away from receiving my frame, but I am getting a little anxious about amount of work I have left to do. Might have to reach out to all the folks that offered help to me throughout this build.

If your oil pan is not leaking leave it be don't mess with it.. There is a baffle plate/pan between pan and block that is thin and will bend up. It is all GLUED together no gasket there..Real PIA .. Most oil leaks come from up higher.. Looking good so far..

Most oil leaks come from up higher.. Looking good so far.. This is what it looks like: From the location, it looks like it could be coming from either front oil pan seal or behind the pulley. I have bought both seals and was planning to replace both. Once I take a pulley off, hopefully it will shed more light. Regardless, thanks for the advice. Again, I have never worked on cars before and figuring this out as I go.

Hopefully it will be the crankshaft front oil seal, this is often a cause of large oil leaks. It's worth doing anyway when changing the cam belt (and water pump).
Well done with the strip, everything looks really tidy. Soon be the fun part !

I am in Morgantown WV and ordered my kit last week, we will have to meet up once we get the cars done! My donor is in the same position as yours, you are lucky to be getting your kit soon. What colors did you go with?

I will get my frame powder coated gloss black locally, and the body will be RAL 2003, Pastel Orange. Picking colors was very frustrating. I wanted to match VW Magma Orange, but then gave up and picked a nice simple orange. Should look good with black, and if it doesn't i'll wrap it in vinyl with some other color.
What colors are you thinking about? Did you get a sport kit or a race one? When I was looking for donors, I saw some nice deals in VW, but it was too out of the way to go check them out.

Quick Question. I am bying an NA Koyo radiator, and i still have NB fan shroud. How different are the shroud mounting locations and how hard would it be to make it fit? Should I just buy a $189 slim shroud for NA radiator?

I ordered the sport with the steel floors. Frame is new tucker orange, there is a pic of a frame in the same color on their Facebook page. My body will be black so it sounds like our cars will be exact opposites. My donor is a 99 with 103k miles, got a steal on it since my neighbor was gonna do the kit and changed his mind.
Where in MD are you? I grew up in Washington county in Boonsboro

That is pretty funny. The color will look cool. Are you doing anything with suspension/subframes? I am painting mine glossy black to match the frames.
I live just north of Baltimore Co, in Reisterstown.

I am planning to powder coat all the parts gloss black once I finish disassembly. Once I send the parts out ill focus on the engine/tranny Maint.
We will def have to meet up, I'm figuring early spring I'll have mine running.
I need to start my own build thread here too, I'm sure I'll have lots of questions!

So I am back from my long business trip / vacation. Seems like it has been forever since I've done anything to the car.
Since I have the engine out, I plan to replace all the belts. What is the thinking on the water pump? The car had ~ 120k miles, so it probably needs to be replaced. I've seen the range from 29.95 to 130+. Do you guys go for OEM or is the third party good enough?
Before I left, I tried to depower the steering rack. I wasn't comfortable doing it the right way, so I did the easy way. I don't like the way it feels or sounds. Anyone who is in the reasonable drive range (probably within 90 minute range) willing to land a hand? I can come to you, or you are welcome to stop by my garage.

Oh yeah. My plan for this weekend is to prep and paint the subframes and possibly all the control arms.
