I picked up a burnt out Rocket, no history or doc's, I thought the engine was a Zetec but its not, looking at the rear of the car, the twin cam belt is at the right, the exhausts are rear most, the engine is on carbs maybe R1's?, they are on the side between the engine and the seats.
Ive googled it, I thought maybe a Duratec but Ive not found any pics that look the same....It looks like a Zetec with a Duratec head? Im confused...Any ideas? thanks

My 'Duratec' ST170 is in fact a Zetec-E with some funky marketing, labeling them 'Duratec' on the rocker cover (I've pulled it off). Same as the MK1 Focus RS, they couldn't be seen to be throwing the same 2.0 into their higher end products, so they did some badge engineering. Looking from behind the car, the inlet is facing you, the exhaust is facing forward, belts are on the right (the offside), gearbox is on the left (nearside). Actual Duratecs are, as you describe, exhaust outlet facing backwards, inlet facing the passenger cell.

Its actually a Zetec SE, not really a Zetec, very strange naming by Ford.

There's the Silvertop Zetec the Blacktop Zetec and then the Zetec trim/styling for the cars themselves. Figure someone in Ford REALLY likes the Zetec name or they got to Z in the alphabet and went into meltdown

Its actually a Zetec SE, not really a Zetec, very strange naming by Ford. Ah, the old Sigma engine? My first car was a Ford Puma, with the Yamaha-developed 1.7 Sigma/Zetec-SE. The naming is mental, its attached to several completely different engines as well as a a basic trim line. AMG and VAG doing something similar now. The 1.6 variant existed in the contemporary Ford Fiesta (MKIV; all of them here). Burton Power have pictures of all the Ford engines here. Now here's where it gets interesting, if you really have a Sigma/SE, it's probably a 1.6 from a Fiesta, super light, about 99hp. I've never heard of one with the 1.7 with VVT (123-125hp), and they didn't make anything bigger than that in petrol. The powertrain is light enough to lift without a crane/hoist once separated. The Duratec-branding on Focus/Fiesta engines didn't come in until the next generation, and there were both 1.8 and 2.0 versions of those.

Thhanks for that, I was going to use a bigger Zetec engine, but having read about the Se I think it would make a great power unit with a turbo added..... BTW,Ive not found the chassis number, is it on a plate or is it stamped on the frame tube? under the bonnet? thanks
