good battery? What voltage when cranking? Good engine earth, PPF earth? Can't see that plug properly but looks like a yellow cable which would mean air bag. I think the battery is fine, it goes down to 10.5V when cranking. I've just checked every earth and its getting a consistent 12.5 V. As for the plug in the photo, it's the one with 2 green wires which feed to a small plastic box with the numbers 8'03, attached to the ignition barrel as seen in the second photo.

Does anyone know what this plug is with the 2 green wires with the ignition barrel and whether its necessary? Thanks

It's a while since I fitted my column but if I remember correctly the only plugs it needs to start is the one to left side with heavy gauge wiring? And the immobiliser.
What you are describing does sound similar to how mine is if I disconnect the immobiliser.
What year mx5 was it?

I have checked the Haynes manual across all years & the only greens & light greens are in the following circuits :
Lights Brakes Stereo electric windows Horn Electric windows
That looks like an immobiliser as it's connected to the ignition barrell. No two greens in the wiring diagram terminate together as an only 2 wire connection. None of the above circuits would need to be coupled to the barrell directly. Keep it connected to barrell when you build your car, this has got to be an immobiliser.

Given your starting issues, I would couple the 2 cables together to bypass the immobiliser then it should fire.

Right OK thanks, I was pretty sure it didn't have an immobiliser as on other photos of a replacement ignition barrel it has the same wires and plug...

Unless it's imported or you have fitted an aftermarket ECU it will have the immobiliser fitted. Looking at your steering column photos I am sure one of those connectors is for the immobiliser?

Just to add, the mellens mk2.5 2002 wiring diagram has the immobiliser circuit in it that matched to my mk2 from 1998 so you can check wires from that

Given your starting issues, I would couple the 2 cables together to bypass the immobiliser then it should fire. You can't bypass the immobiliser on the mk2, the barrel is linked to a transmitter box near then column which in turn is coded to the ECU. Either one is removed from the equations and the car doesn't start. The mk1 had a much simpler setup when they were fitted, usually at after market. The only way to remove it is to buy something like an me221

The black ring around the barrel is the key reader, this has 2 wires that go to the immobiliser circuit. The 2 green wires are to remind you if you have left the key in.

Oh my apologies I didn't know the Mx5 came with an immobiliser stock! I have found th immobiliser but can't seem to see any green wires feeding into it

Look at the anti theft diagram in this manual www.mellens.net/mazda/mazda_miata_extra_manual/2001_wiring.pdfThat was 90% accurate to mine which is also a 98 mk2. 100% this is the reason your car won't start. The green wires are nothing to do with the immobiliser. You should have another 2 wires that go back to the immobiliser on the main harness. Also make sure when you are trying to start it you are using the key with the red chip on it.
