The journey has officially began ! My MX5 arrived on Saturday for a cheap £350. It's a 1.8 & failed the mot on welding. The car belonged to somebody interested I drifting, he fitted Avo shocks, momo steering wheel, 50mm spacers & massive 215/35/18 alloy wheels & a badly fitted fast and furious body kit blended into the flared wings.the previous owner just sprayed primer straight over the Car, so the panels are really un usable as nobody wants to spray second hand panels. I know that my returns on the un wanted pieces will be low due to the cowboy bodywork, but the extras make the purchase worth while. The engine is as sweet as a nut, so that's a bonus. Oh, forgot to say that the previous owner fitted a tow bar! Time to resurrect the poor thing I think !

I have started stripping the wiring loom out this afternoon, loads of blood, sweat & coughing ! I am using masking tape & a pen to label every single connection & taping screws to the dials & pod in an attempt not to loose fixings for a change lol. I have pulled the back loom through into the cabin now so its starting to look a bit like a pile of spaghetti & hopefully my labels will survive the chaos. I have just downloaded the exocet build guide from the MEV website, so I think that I am going to read that before I attack the loom just to make sure.

I have decided to start keeping track of my build costs now in the signature screen. I think its quite interesting seeing what other people do with their budgets & what they have managed to achieve. Personally, my build is going to have a low budget. The build tally will obviously increase with purchases, but also decline with sales of unwanted items.
I will be building my car on an open driveway, with next to no specialist tools so this build could get interesting !

OPEN DRIVEWAY FOR THE WIN!!
I'm doing the same. plan your budget playfully, I had every intention of keeping the cost down as far as possible, and have since splurged on a great many luxuries, with a few more to come.
What's your time frame? I was storming through the build process until the weather changed (I started in March/April 2017)
All the best with the project!! enjoy it!!

I am hoping to get the car finished by the end of this year. I wanted to complete the build by maybe August, but due to subsidence in my house I have got extensive building work going on. My tin garage had to be taken apart for the builders to get to the corner of my house, so due to bad luck, my 'all singing all dancing' budget has taken a huge hit. So I have had to compromise a lot of the extras that I was planning & delay ordering the kit so that it will be here after the building has finished. Well, that's the plan anyway. As for the wife, I have 2 sets of figures, the relaxed ones accidently missing invoices will be on the laptop, while the real one is on here & my wife doesn't have my password. Lol

I started keeping track of spend and found it far to depressing! I haven't totted anything up for at least 12 months. I am Far happier and will probably live longer

Bought a new set of wheels today to bring the car back in line with build spec, a set of Fox 195/50/15. They are second hand & will be refurbed, but as previously mentioned this is a budget build. The new alloys replace the gigantic 215/35r18's that come with the car which is now on eBay. I have had a bit of a shock today whilst changing my wheels. The Avo adjustable suspension is coil bound & will need to be replaced as it's probably cheaper than a refurb. This peed me off a little as it was one of the attractions of this donor. I couldn't check at the time as the car had fast & furious style skirts etc mixed with the huge wheels, so I was un able to check. I had to break the sideskirts off as they were all bonded into the flared arches & rear bumper, just to get a Jack under the car. The rot is horrific ! They had gripfilled the body kit on to the sills, which were open enough to put your fist in, how the hell this car has not folded is beyond me. The rust in the wishbones etc is prolific, so what was a tight budget, now has to stretch to sand blasting & powdercoating, then the bushes need replacing as they are all worn. I am gutted ! Next to nothing to sell on, but at least the engine, gearbox & loom is in good condition.

Just for the fun of it, check out the rear arch after the sills were broken off. Loving the wood screws to keep the bodywork on.

When you first posted that the donor had failed on welding I thought you meant just a little bit of welding was required. It is frightening to think it was probably on the road right up to the time of that failure

Scary isn't it ? When I bought it the chap said that it needed a bit of welding on the sills, because that's what it failed on. I didn't realise the car pretty much had a broken back ! Bodykits are as dangerous as hell, if you look at my profile pic you can see it doesn't look too bad, you really can't see the important stuff when body kits are fitted. On further inspection, the bottom of the A pillar was also gone.
