I decided to buy a part built car from a member on here.

spent the last week ordering various parts to get it started and also spending time seeing what is missing from the engine(lots) and trying to sort a poor running issue. Car will start but if the throttle is pressed it will stall. longer I've left it to warm up the less it wants to stall, still has a slight hesitation from idle but will rev properly once its above 2k~ unplugging the IACS makes no difference to how it runs. Have ordered an Air Flow Meter to see if it sorts it. Also changed the Ignitor with no effect.  

so far:

Coolant temp sensors front(fan switch) rear and one for the gauge.
coolant recovery bottle.
Turbo fitting kit for a TDo4
New coil pack.
Bottom engine cam belt cover with the timing marks since all of them are missing. 
Wing mirrors + Brackets for fitting.
Air Flow meter
Coil pack
Coolant reroute kit
New thermostat. 
Removed exhaust system to begin fitting turbo.
Replacement Ignitor
 






Next Jobs are to get the radiator mounted correctly. Give the whole system a proper coolant flush since what came out was horrendous. Have a feeling I'll need to replace the rad since nothing came out of the drain hole and we had to pull the hoses to drain.

Is it possible to clean the old rad out off the car or not worth the hassle? 

The fuel tank will probably be junked to, think it may bring more trouble than its worth. 

If anyone could post some pics or diagrams so I could check how the fueling system is setup that would be great.

My first thought when I saw that tank is that it looks too high to get the boot lid to sit over it?

Some people have successfully used aftermarket tanks but there are some safety requirements for the I think. Someone may be able to explain exactly what.

If you just need a standard radiator just buy a new one from eBay they are peanuts for aftermarket ones!

Have you checked the Air Valve on the intake manifold for proper operation..
What is your fuel pressure..
Ignition timing set at what..
New plug wires..
The ground block that is secured to the frame pass side.. Have you taken it off and apart and clean all the connectors in it..
Has the engine been apart for a timing belt?? If so check the cam to crank timing marks..
Switch all your wheels/tires side to side they are rotating in wrong direction.. V should be facing forward when rolling forward..

hi guys.

mikeeyboy the tank cover fits over fine, just needs a hole cutting for the top feed. In two minds on using it or if the tank is setup correctly yet so leaving it till last.

gwnwar - Air valve hasn't been checked yet, neither has fuel pressure. Ignition timing cant be checked until my lower cover turns up since all were missing. thanks for the tip on the ground block. Will look into it all once it stops raining here. The wheels are coming of to be refurbished/possibly have some different ones fitted too.

Been a busy few weeks, finally got my downpipe and manifold all fitted. Not gonna lie its been a massive pain getting it to fit. Three of the nuts on the manifold are very difficult to get to, but three 14mm spanners later and its done 😬😬. The silver Scandura is temp fitted for now until I can get a tool to cut them down. RX-7 yellow injectors have been fitted too. 


Got my AEM wideband sensor to wire in now. Started fitting some front lights and test sprayed a front arch to see if I liked the colour, gone for Ford Frozen White. Ordered myself a compressor and spray gun to do the rest of the bodywork in 2k.

If anyone spots anything suspect feel free to spam me about it 

Just got my intercooler pipes to order, the ECU, weld myself a sports cat and cat back up and sort out the fuel tank..... Sounds so easy typing it lol.

Oh how are people mounting the dash pod (mx5) doesn't have any fixing points to pickup on the speedo clocks. looks like it would have been held in by the extra dash in the 5

Paul.. What water sending unit do you have at the front of the engine..Fan or ECU ??
Did you get your fuel hoses run front to rear..
On fuel tank plate center most tube is the supply through the filter to the Front of the fuel rail..
Rear of fuel rail return to out most tube on plate..
Have you replaced the plugs and wires??
What year and engine size is the donor??
Are you going to use the MEV radiator mount bracket.. if so you will need a 90>97 radiator because of the way they mount OEM or alum.type.. If going OEM get an automatic rad it is a little bigger just seal tubes on lower tank that are for auto trans..

The donor was a 1.6 1993
not sure what you mean by water sending unit, I'm using a coolant reroute kit which keeps the fan switch at the front.

The fuel hoses were done by the previous owner but I assume in a hurry since no sign of a fuel filter.

I've used the standard 93 year radiator. Was told by MEV I couldn't use the bracket they supply because mine is an early model with the split nose and bonnet.

Plugs have been changed to BK7RE. I've not changed the leads yet, but have replaced the coil pack.

Water sending unit didn't know which you used up front.. fan OK
I would mount the filter were I could get to it to change easy..like the OEM place right rear in front of tank and low..
Yes you will have to make up brackets for radiator a couple of pieces of 90deg alum.
When you place radiator the cap top no more then 10mm above the side tubes..
Plug wires are a known wear item they will look good but be bad inside.. will cause miss with given throttle from idle speed..
Was your engine worked on by PO like timing belt and water pump..
FYI with the AFM NEVER remove the screws holding the connector to it always remove the wire clip to separate it from harness..
Make sure the black wire ground from AFM is good, check with OHM meter need 0.00 reading..
FYI your tires are on wrong side of car.. Switch the L>R so point of V tread is pointing forward when rolling forward to let water out of groves..
