Do you need the brake back plate on the Exocet

I think I saw somewhere that you have to remove the brake disk back plate from the hub on the mx5 when converting to an Exocet, possibly something to do with the wheel wing mounting brackets or something like that. I'm overhauling the front control arms and noticed that the disk back plates are rusty..... Like most things on a 10+ year old MX-5, I don't want to replace them if they will end up in the bin in 6 months.
