Need some advice, when towing on a car dolly do I need to disconnect the drive shaft? Both rear wheels will be rolling on the ground while towing. I've read if I don't it could ruin the transmission something about not enough oil circulation. If this is correct what's the quickest way to do it? Doesn't make sense to me as it will be in neutral.

Mazda says not to do it because there is no oil circulation in neutral. However the consensus on the internet is that no one has ever damaged a Miata transmission by flat towing. I plan on setting up my Exocet for flat towing. We'll see how it goes! Disconnecting the drive shaft is just 4 bolts/nuts. Pretty easy to do. You'll have to figure out how to strap it away from the diff though.

Looks like they're towing a Suburban (~6000lbs) with a Ford Explorer (~4000lbs)! Also that tow dolly doesn't looks like any I've every seen. The wheels are very close together. I would bet towing an Exocet with a vehicle that weighs 3-4 times as much would be much safer.

Back in the day when I drove a wrecker, for rear wheel drive cars, we lifted the back wheels in the air, and tied down the steering wheel with the seat belt. essentialy towing the car backwards. If that were not possible due to damage, we dropped the driveshaft and lifted the front wheels. Hope this helps.

If the Mazda box is similar to the Ford box, which I figure it will be, the entire gear set will be turning if you tow even in neutral. The synchro units determine which gear is actually transmitting power, the other gears are still engaged but freewheeling.
However whether this will lead to oil starvation and damage I can't say.

I went through this exact same debate with myself two years ago and decided to go for it and see what happens. I've had no issues and probably done at least 1,000 miles. The one thing I'd mention is that the U-haul tow dollies do make a lot of noise.

One issue with tow dolly is that if you have an incident that renders your car undrivable, it could possibly be un towable by the dolly as well. I had that happen once.
