First off Hi I'm new to the owners club but I have spent hours searching through previous posts I'm somewhere around Feb 2013 and haven't got a yes or no answer so here goes.... I know some people have used cat d and cat c registered MX5s as a donor and that this can be done but my question is does the cat d/c transfer to the MEVs V5 document and show it as a write off when its hpi checked? Hopefully one of you guys that have used a salvage donor will be able to tell me as I have found a Mk2.5 1.8 sport with all the goodies that was previously damaged but repaired and now back on the road. Its at a good price but I'm wondering if I should keep it a bit more straight forward and go for one that isn't on the register. Cheers Mark

If you have the V5 then it will be used to check that it falls into the criteria for "kit conversion". All Exocet's are classed as kit conversions and registered on an age related plate. That is to say a year of plate that is the same as the donor but a different number. Then you do not need an MOT for 3 years. Whilst not registered as "new" the replacement V5 with MEV as manufacturer will show "The date of first registration" as the date it was IVA'd. Therefore "previous" records for the donor should not be recorded. Cat C's do not normally come with a V5 and so the risk is being stuck with a Q plate. If builders have a cherished number on a retention certificate they can apply to put this on the MEV at the time of registration.

Thanks for the quick reply I only turned my back to make a coffee I will have to pop over and see you at some point as I'm only 25 minutes down the road from you. The plan so far is to get an mx5 with some ticket so it can be used for a while rather than striping an unknown vehicle then wondering when problems pop up after the build "Was it like that or did I mess something up transferring the parts over"

Cat d and c vehicles also I believe do not need a VIC test anymore. So you should be able to apply for a logbook if you haven't got one before You start the whole iva process.

Thanks for the reply. A bit more poking around and research needed before I pickup a donor then but I have just turned up a 2004 1.8 with 80k with full history and a full mot for a little over a grand. That would give me plenty of time to use the MX before striping it. Best part is no photos in the add so it probably looks horrible helping keep the price down lol

We also bought a runner, with a long MOT and really enjoyed driving it and exploring its characteristics before we started stripping it. The downside my son did a track-day at Blyton Park, and I got really attached to it as an MX5 in its own right. Probably delayed the start of the strip-down by a good couple of months, but well worthwhile!

Know the feeling, I got too attached to my original perfect donor and ended up buying a 2nd donor so that I could keep my MX5, it's a slippery slope.

In the price bracket I'm looking at its most likley the mx5s last mot so unless it pulls some serious moves on me I wont be getting the welder out to rebuild sills and inner arches.... time will tell
