Sooooooo….. My deposit has been paid to Stuart and now I’m awaiting my order form. I’ve had my donor mk2 for around about 4 years using it as a road runner to go on trips, a bit of autosolo with a fair bit of success and latterly for sprints and hillclimbs. The car is pretty good mechanically as I’ve “Stress tested” most parts of it and the engine only had 67k on the clock. So when I found out the bottom of the car looked like a cheese grater I had a decision to make whether I try to find a new shell or try something a bit different. This is when I found the Exocet and decided to go ahead. Although I plan to do some further sprints and autosolos in the car, I don’t really want to have a full cage on the car so have decided to go for the MSA spec rollbar instead. The car will be road going hopefully so the lights will be bought too. The bits that I’m not sure of at the moment are the seats and whether I want to go for the GRP options or stick to something like Elise seats. Also the colour. At the moment I’m swaying towards Black frame, red panels and (if possible) black wheel guards but we’ll see what I end up putting on the form. The strip down is due to start this weekend if I can get a hold of the stripping guide. Updates to follow…..

I used to have a VX220 and a lot of the guys had seats like this which would be ideal:

So on Saturday I posted off my order form. The spec I’ve picked is: Black Powdercoated frame MSA spec roll-bar Red panels with black wheel guards Single Nose cone Flyscreen Lights This weekend I start to strip the car with 3 other able and eager helpers. In reality they just want to play with tools and drink beer.

At the weekend I got started with the strip down with the help of some eager mates. What a pain in the hoop the loom is. It's not the disconnecting it that's the problem, it's all of the little plastic clips and ties that hold it in everywhere. When doing the interior I decided not to try and keep the dash as it was a lot easier just to set my ape-like mate on it with a crow-bar to create some "access panels" Work started with the rear: Then the front: Then the dash came out: Cables out of the engine bay: The obligatory loom out shot: And here's how I left it: By my calculations, I need to disconnect the steering column, remove the fuel tank and then disconnect the body and that's about it (he says)

Just when I thought it was going well, the problems start. Getting the fuel tank out is becoming an absolute pain and the subframe nuts at the rear have gone part way down and now the bolts are just spinning 😕

Cut them off with a cut off wheel and disc.

Cut them off with a cut off wheel and disc. Problem is that I can't get access to them to get a grinder disc in there. I'm considering just cutting through the rails from the top and just cutting the shell around them.

I’ve now got my delivery date for picking up my kit. Exciting times, but needs I need to get my backside in gear and finish of stripping the donor. Managed to get the front subframe bolts off last night which wasn’t too much hassle but I’m still struggling with the rear nuts. The bolts are just spinning and I can’t get in to cut them off. Looks like I’ll need to take some drastic action and just cut the shell around them unless someone has a magical technique that they can share?

and we have separation... Managed to get enough space to grind and cut the bolts off and then managed to get the fuel tank out. I really should have attached the PPF again before I lifted off because it's collapsed, but hey ho. The engine was pretty useless because of the cold weather and probably needed serviced, so I've just left it as it is just now and I'll get a pair of hands on each corner to walk it out the garage.

Managed to get the back of the car stripped and started to prep it. Got the garage cleared and ready for the new arrival Thursday was the day it all happened The subframe was attacked with a flak disk and a pressure washer and it came up pretty well. Since the subframe isn't really seen that much I decided that I can just paint it. Also decided that my uprated anti-roll bars needed a spruce up. Had some gold protective metal paint that I used on some wheels a while ago so used some of that. I have a feeling that the prep work on this is going to take a while.

Does every kit come with champagne or is it only because it's nearly Christmas?

Does every kit come with champagne or is it only because it's nearly Christmas? It's apparently standard with every kit. Did you not get yours?
