Steve Exocet build barnsley

Hi I'm Steve 31 from Barnsley. Been on the forum for a while now reading diarys and such. I bought my mk2 1.8 donor for £500 in may this year with 9month mot so decided to run it over the summer. I never realised how much fun these were. Anyway fast forward to mid September I started to clear years and years worth of rubbish from my parents garage. Then painted floor and walls and the place looked miles better. Started to bring the few tools I own down bought the halford advance set a few years ago 4 axle stands and jack and anything else I thought would be useful. Soon realised I needed some tool storage and always fancied a half decent chest so went for the Halfords industrial top box and chest which was half price. Put chest in place and built a workbench. Last weekend the car moved into the garage and stripping started. I'm now at the point were the body is ready to part which will be this weekends job. I've loosed all 4 axle nuts which was a breeze with the Clark mains impact wrench bought after seeing it recommended on here. I have stripped a few cars before and a few diy jobs on my own car but not a machanic so all new skills I'll try to keep this updated as I work on the car I plan on a full strip down and rebuild of the sub frames.

Hi, I'm just down the road in Sheffield, buy originally from Barnsley.

Lots of good advice on here, I'd say take your time with the strip and try to cause as little damage to things such as wiring loom as possible.

Thanks for the welcome the looms out front to back and all labelled along with all the spare connections. One thing I should have labeld is all the vacuum hoses.

I didn't bother with those either. Have you ordered the kit?

No be next year before I order the kit I get married in July hoping to have kit just after. Plan is get as much as possible looking nice and new so got plenty of time to make sure I'm doing it right

Nice job on the garage you just increased the value of parents house.. You might want to put down a deposit on a kit and pay a little each month or so.It will add up and you won't have that large cost all at once..Sell all you can to pay it down.. Might make new wife happy too.

Put the Halfords wedding list to the better half she wasn't happy....

Managed a few hours in the garage Friday to remove last few bits before I could lift the body and went to borrow a friends engine hoist. I managed to remove all bolts holding the body on without too many problems bar one of the nuts on long stud at the rear which I ended up cutting off.
Saturday was the big day hardly slept the night before like a kid on Christmas Eve we lifted the body off without any trouble apart from body wanted to tip forward so borrowed mums bin to help. All straight forward thanks to all the info from this site we had nothing attached left so came straight off. Hardest part was trying to shuffle body and roller about with the help of a few breeze blocks got the roller back in garage. removed fuel tank vin number handbrake cables and suspension tops from body and she ready to get scrapped. Spent the rest of Saturday plus gasing all fixings and packed up.
Sunday i carried on stripping and now left with engine and box attatched to subframe and a pile of parts so sort what needs cleaning painting and what's going for blasting and coating. So far really enjoying the process and thanks to this site any problems I've came across haven't been that big. I've added a few pictures

Yes; I can understand that. Machine Mart is a much better emporium for such occasions

Sorry but I must disagree Martin, surely the ultimate wedding gift has to be an Exocet kit. Failing that we do offer stainless steel desk top ornaments so tight guests need only part with a fiver

Very nice work on the garage👍🏻 Thanks to you I finally seen a build on a single garage, so far everyone seems to be fortunate to work on very spacious areas, guess I have a lot of cleanning down to do so I can start my own build! keep it up buddy I will be following this tread!

Well it’s been a while since my last update I’ve still been working on the exocet. This is going to be a large update to get upto date. I’m going to try keep my diary upto date. So carry on from last post got the body off and away to scrap yard and lots of stripping and late nights left me with a pile of bits to be cleaned and either painted or powder coated

Gearbox cleaned and painted with hammerite smooth silver







Then stripped cleaned and painted engine also changed timing belt water pump oil seals and clutch

Next it was on to brakes and steering rack. I had power steering and wanted to remove this and decided to strip it down and have it welded by a friend. I stripped brakes and rebuilt with new seals and pistons. Then everything had a lick of paint along with rear hubs.















Then it was time to start reassembly of the skate I was going to replace all nuts and bolts from suspension mainly due to most of them being destroyed and partly because I could bear anymore cleaning the end everything was replaced bar the alignment bolts as there was none in stock when I ordered. Also fitted energy suspension bushes along with new drop links all round lower ball joints and upper boots. Also painted diff prop and ppf.
