Ok... I'm missing something... It looks like the Exocet fender mounts won't work with stock rims. I was working on mocking up the fender mounts, and it's not even close. When I install the factory wheel/tire, the front wheel front fender mount not only touches the tire, but it touches the rim. I don't know that even a 1cm spacer will work.
Is that expected? Or am I doing something wrong (yes, the rotor is on the hub).
It looks like 10mm spacers are $30 each, so in additional to refinishing my wheels I'll need to spend an additional $150 or so for spacers and longer studs (not including new lugs, which I need to replace anyway).
Is there a good reason why the fender mounts don't work with the stock rims?
How do I determine what rims will work with the fender mounts?
thanks
John S. (yes, this build is taking me darned near forever)

Because stock miata rims are not stock exocet rims.

Might be different across the pond, but in the UK stock wheels need around a 32mm (hubcentric) spacer.

I went back to the build manual and it does say you need 0-10mm offset wheels. I was trying to save some money on the initial build and refinish the stock rims, but after I spend time refinishing, purchase 30mm worth of spacers, longer studs, etc. (plus I need new tires), I'm better off, just biting the bullet and buying a suitable tire and wheel package. however, I'm glad I asked this because I would have ended us with rims that need the spacer anyway... thanks for the help.

I also found this out the hard way by not doing all the research first. My donor came with both a set of stock wheels and a set of aftermarket wheels which have very different offset. My stock wheels won't fit over the Wilwood big brake calipers that I have and I found that I needed to go with 32mm spacers for my aftermarket wheels to push them out far enough. The spacers weigh almost quite a bit: I'd estimate about 2 pounds. That's quite a lot of extra un-sprung weight but I don't have the budget for new wheels right now.

I've heard that the fender mounts from Exomotive sometimes require some manipulation (bending) to properly fit, even with the proper wheels / offset. Doesn't sound like a big deal though....
