I also changed from a 2001 year 1.8 to a 2004 year ST170. I was using the donor 1.8 ECU, clocks and the 1.8 wiring loom and fuse box from the donor
I used the st170 engine loom and ST170 ECU loom with the rest of the loom sections as per 1.8
Several wiring issues came up.
on the 1.8 the transponder ring on the ignition is powered from the ecu. On the ST 170 the transponder ring is powered directly from the 2nd stage ignition circuit.
The ECU loom connector to fusebox has 1 pin swapped around, it is the reverse gear switch circuit for the reversing light.
( GEM = General Electronics Module )
2004 ST170 electrics are GEM 2 and my donor 2001 1.8 was GEM 1. The main difference is that GEM 1 does not control indicators, that is all managed through the Hazard switch. On Gem 2 vehicles the hazard switch is just that, a switch and you need a set of flasher relays for the indicators.
I kept the 1.8 clocks and they work fine on with the st170 ecu , I did not bother with the st170 pressure gauges.
Was it worth the effort , oh yeah...
Things to check on your ST170 , check the IMRC , Inlet Manifold Running Controller. I had to rebuild mine.
You'll have to replace the donor manifold and down pipes and construct a custom cat by chopping and welding an aftermarket job.
I suggest you consider a high pressure plate and organic clutch plate. The donor 1.8 clutch will struggle if you push it hard
Good luck, if you have questions just ask.
