+1 day since, the car jumps to life and falls into a nice, easy idle like it used to. I'm quite pleased with this. Changed the oil, of course. As expected, a bit milky with a notable gasoline smell. Seems to idle much more happily with the new stuff.

I gotta sort out a better exhaust. I'm really partial to the packaging of the dual-outlet exhaust that Exomotive sells in their store, however they list it for NB applications. (I've pinged them about NA fitment, hope to hear back from them soon.) Barring that, I'll probably dive down the path of madness and fabricate my own version.

Spent a very short amount of time on the car last night making use of a DIY from ClubRoadster.Net to tame the annoying hyper flash that comes with using LED turn signals. ( clubroadster.net/vb_forum/17-audio-electronics/41048-na-diy-flasher-mod-led-bulbs.html ). The flasher mod is super quick and easy, I think I spent 20 minutes on it in total. The only thing that was really annoying is that buying an 1120 piece assortment of 1/4 watt resistors was less expensive than a smaller pack of the specific resistor I needed for this project. I've got resistors for days now! Before the flasher mod... After the flasher mod... I also received an 8 channel relay board which I'll be using to build a smart lighting controller that will, eventually, replace the flasher unit and enable automatic headlights and a bunch of other dorky geek things. And not related to my Exocet build, a friend traded me his E60 M5 for the weekend. (In exchange for use of my Dodge Caravan for a camping road trip.) It's super comfortable but I'm not sure I'd take the M5 over a 550, I know that I have more fun driving my 135.

Spent a good portion of the day unwinding a lot of stuff from the factory loom. I've made some pretty good progress but it's been slow going. So far this pile of wire is my reward. At least I'm not going to have buy wire for one-off runs and patches pretty much ever again. There a few connectors that didn't get labeled when the donor was taken apart, a few that weren't there. The DRL module connector is one of those since my '97 wasn't equipped with DRLs...but could have been, I guess. The wiring diagram I have has two versions of the headlight circuits, one with and one without DRLs. Assuming that my loom didn't have the provisions for DRLs unused connector on the harness confused the hell out of me until I traced out a few of its wires. Winding down the evening I took a couple of minutes to clean up and and wrap the brake light wiring to take up a ton of slack in the factory loom. Though functional I'm also really annoyed at this first pass at my brake light wiring. The only thing keeping me from redoing it all right now is the knowledge that I'm going be reworking all of the lighting later on. I have a friend stopping past tomorrow to give me a hand bleeding the brakes and clutch. Super excited by this. The Exo should be able to move [and stop] under its own power by the end of Sunday day!

Very nice! A bit of a tangent but its something I've been thinking about. For those test drives, before you start the SB100 process, what is the worse possible consequence if you get stopped and the officer plays it strictly by the book ? I would imagine impounding is a very real possibility as you're taking a 'track only' / off road vehicle ( in its current state ) on public roads.

You receive a ticket for driving an un-registered, un-insured vehicle and the officer confiscates your car and has it crushed. Seriously. No joke.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. I think after I get my kit done / powdered, I'll head to the DMV to get try to get the SB100 process started. As I recall, SteadFast was able to get a 60 day temp tag allowing him to drive to CHP even before bodywork was on.

Happy to hear you are enjoying it! I hope to meet up with you folks soon!
I remember reading that Steadfast received a 60 temp tag on his first visit. But I wanted to note that my mileage varied. On my first trip to the DMV (Fremont), I was only granted a 1 day moving permit. This was intended to get my CHP and B&L inspection completed. On my second visit to the DMV(Hayward) I received a 60 day temp tag (after I completed my CHP VIN and brake/head lamp inspection).

I seriously have to thank you for taking the time to talk to me that day in Saratoga. I honestly do not think that I'd have pulled the trigger on this build otherwise.

Now that it's moving under its own power there are thing that need to be done/fixed.
1. Front turn signals - The My headlights are awesome. The amber bulbs in them, tho, won't work as turn signals very well since they can't actually be seen when the headlights are on. I've ordered a set of motorcycle turn signals that roughly mimic the shape of the headlight buckets. (ETA Tomorrow.)
2. Exhaust leaks - I hate working on exhausts. Mine's leaking from the joints fore and aft of the cat. I'll try torquing them down again tonight and seeing where that puts me.
3. Cooling - Woefully terrible. There are a lot of things that could be going on here, I'm just going to take a shotgun to the problem. Water pump (and timing belt since I'll be pulling the front of the motor apart anyway), coolant reroute, and double-row radiator with dual fans/shroud. (Also, EGR delete because, like the timing belt, as long as I'm messing around at the back of the motor.) Fortunately none of this prevents me from running/working on/driving the car...it's peace of mind. In the short term I need to figure out why the radiator fan isn't coming on consistently. (Probably a lose ground somewhere.)
4. Windshield - I guess I'm going to have to go and bug Tap Plastic this weekend.
5. Brakes - I need to re-bleed them; there's still air in them somewhere. I've also got to install the parking brake.
6. Seats - Need to pull the driver's seat back out to paint the seat mounts and install the driver's side harness. Need to install harness and seat for the passenger side.
7. Speedo cable or complete replacement of my gauge cluster - My speedo cable is super broken. (Worn through) I'm contemplating whether or I should replace the cable or just scrap the stock gauge cluster entirely to replace it with individual gauges which has been a long-term plan.
