Hang in there Sean. When you finally get that CA license plate on the back of your car, it will be all worth it!

Physically mounted, now. Looks a bit like Hell but this is just for function. Have thoughts for better mounting already. Waiting for parts to put this thing together and the absurd amount of rain we have had has allowed me down a lot. At the DMV this morning to beg for an extension to my temp registration, then I'll make another appointment with the Ref.

Did you use any kind of gasket between the frame and tube bracket to stop paint chipping..

I have another appointment with the Ref tomorrow morning. Windscreen and wiper are installed and man do they make a HUGE difference to how the car feels to drive. I really like it. I also got the rear bodywork mounted but I'm not exactly happy with some aspects and need to revisit the filler neck sometime soonish. I'm also not pleased with haw between up the gel coat has gotten from all of mamhandling. Vinyl wrapping will probably happen in the future. I dumped the chrome trailer plate light for something small and stealth from a motorcycle. It basically vanishes against the black body. As much as I want to jump straight into turbo build on this thing once I'm registered I really need to do something about my joke of a suspension setup, first.

Back from my second Ref visit. Not especially hopeful that this will be my last visit. In particular, when I spoke to the Ref in January he said that I'd need to have one wiper on the car, today he mentioned that BAR has gotten even more anal since then and wants there to be two wipers.
Fortunately, I have a second wiper and motor sitting in my garage, all I need to do is fabricate a new mount and wire it in.
While the Ref was on the phone with a guy from the BAR, there seemed to be some question about how my windshield is mounted and that may be no bueno. To the Ref's credit, he did argue the point that NOTHING in the CHP SPCNS guides say anything about how the windshield needs to be mounted. Still, I'm expecting the BAR to give me the finger on that, too.
I'm now in a (slight) holding pattern while I wait for the BAR to make a decision on today's visit and feed that information back to the Evergreen College Ref.
I'm really, REALLY annoyed at the BAR's game of Calvin Ball. I am not at all upset at the Ref. The Evergreen Valley College Ref is a really cool guy, he just has to follow the seeming randomness of the BAR.

What does BAR all do other than smog to 1960, issue a VIN and check your windshield? This is crazy. I was thinking BAR would be the relatively easy part!

Wow, that's really annoying! What does BAR all do other than smog to 1960, issue a VIN and check your windshield? This is crazy. I was thinking BAR would be the relatively easy part! You know, I though that was going to be the easy part as well. The Ref does a few things. They don't give you your VIN, however. That's done by the CHP which was, honestly, the easiest of the appointments. Things that the Referee will do are: 1) Examine your vehicle, taking photographs of it. This will include the engine. 2) Check that things appear to be built correctly and aren't obviously dangerous however this is not an exhaustive examination. 3) Copy all of the paperwork you have collected up to that point, including brake and light inspection certificates, and transmit those the BAR in Sacramento. It is the BAR in Sacramento that determines if your car meets whatever standards they happen to be applying that day. I've found that these change. 4) The ref will tell you once the BAR has decided one way or the other if you pass. If you don't pass, he'll tell you what you need to fix. 5) If you pass, he'll do a base-line smog and apply a certificate sticker to your car, and give you some more paperwork that you take back to the DMV. The BAR references the document CHP 892 when deciding which requirements to enforce for SPCNS registration. You should be able to Google that document and have it come up on top of your search.

Nothing is the same in CA .. my CHP ( after two visit ) refuse to give me a VIN. I think he's kind annoyed I even came back the second time ( even though he told me to get paperwork from the DMV for him to assign a VIN .. which I came back with ) told me he's done it a bunch of times .. the chassis number is the VIN. Here's the CHP 892 document ( www.mightyram50.net/vbulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=7338&d=1386538163 ).

I got crazy lucky that he was having a good day and helped me out on that. I've since riveted the the number tag I got with my Exocet documents to my frame.

Wow, it is amazing how much of this has changed in just a few months. Hell, I was irritated with the hoops I had to go through, which were nothing compared to this. I wish you guys luck as it seems they are making it incredibly difficult to get street legal.

Thanks for the detailed pics of the windshield install. I'm going to borrow from your approach to get through reg in IL, this has been one of the big remaining things aside from replacing a blown engine I need to get done before the track season. Build looks great by the way!

So, smallish update. I jacked up my windshield clamps while working out better brackets and have had to order a new set. (Always make sure you're using the correct pitch bolts.) In going from four bracket, two on each side, to two large brackets, one on either side. That should be a little stronger and should, hopefully, quel any concerns the BAR have about my windshield mounts. In the mean time, I've been working on adding a second wiper. My first thought was just throw a second motor and wiper in and call it a day. That works but sucks a lot. It's impossible to keep the wipers in sync with each other. Bunch of other small problems, to. Anyway, it was a dumb idea. Lesson learned, moving on. New plan: swap one of the motors with a manual/hand-crank wiper connected to the motor driven wiper by a linkage. This is a lot of effort for something that's never going to see actual use.

I'm too tired to write much more. Enjoy photos of a super janky linkage I threw together for my super janky windshield wipers for my only slightly janky windshield. It works way better than I'd have imagined it would.

Are you going to use 2 motors as in pic?? or 1 motor and 1 manual unit linked..A lot of work for 5 minute test.. What kind of tree are you working under oak or maple..just kidding.. Like the 1 piece bracket each side of windshield..
