firstly sorry if this post is in the wrong section. So plumbed the tank and rad in. went for a start and nothing. engine turns on the starter and the fuel pump is running. but I'm not getting a spark. I've got 12v at the coil from the engine fuse. but nothing from the ecu when cranking. I've adjusted the crank sensor but still no joy. I have got this plug on the steering column that I can't find a connector for. I've pretty much run out of ideas now. so any help would be greatly appreciated.

That connector came from the same harness area that the connector you pictured did on my car a 99. It has 2 wires blue/red and blue/orange connecting it to the green wires. The blue wires are smaller gauge and it looks like one is connected to the large white to white harness connector and the other connects in the black to black harness connector that hooks up to the wiper/turn signal light switch on my car. Do you have cruise control? Above is mine connected above ign switch which is disconnected. Above is 1 of the blue wires where it connects in the big white connector harness to harness connection. And here is where it connects in the black harness to turn signal/cruise/light/and wiper switch connector. I hope that helps some. My donor has cruise control so if yours doesn't it may be related and not used.

Clearly check out the spare connector first.
Then 1 are you getting fuel? 2 can you get a signal from the diagnostic box? 3 does your car have/had an immobiliser fitted?

thanks for the replies. I'm definitely getting fuel at least to the filter. (pulled the pipe yesterday and got soaked.)
how do I go about getting a signal from the diagnostic box?
car only had factory immobiliser.
thanks again

I think the factory immobilizer is fitted to UK models - ECU, immobilizer module and key must all match. If the donor was running that should be OK. You may also have a factory alarm system - that can be eliminated as it connects to the doors, bonnet and boot with a sounder under the bonnet. I have not been able to find any circuit diagrams for these systems - all the on-line ones seem to be for NAS cars. I have traced these systems but my notes are in Wales!

Thanks for the help. I found a loose earth on top of the inlet manifold and when i checked the crankshaft position sensor there was some damage on it where the crank pulley teeth had caught it. Ive ordered a new one which should be here tomorrow. I keep you updated.

Squiddy What year and model is the donor?? So UK spec cars after 95 had factory immobilizers fitted behind the switch panel to the RHS of the steering wheel. These were either Lucas or Temic units. This should be obvious on your loom. Here is an example However, lets not get ahead of ourselves. First thing is to see if your you can get a fault code from the Diagnostic box. To do this your need a 12v LED and jumper wire. You can get a 12v LED from Maplin for a couple of pence. First install the jumper wire (red in my pic) and then the LED. Turn the ignition on and the LED should flash once for about 5 sec and then go out and then if there is a fault code flash a series of long and short flashes indicating a fault. Jumper wire goes between GND and TEN and LED FEN to +B port. Here is a useful link www.mazdamenders.net/index.php/faqs-a-how-to/100-maintenance/123-mk1-diagnostic-fault-codes.html

gilbert sorry i should have said my donor is a 2000 1.8. I'll try the diagnostic port tomorrow, guessing ill probably have quite a few codes as i've removed abs, power steering and a whole host of other things. below is a picture of what i think is my immobiliser unit (feel free to correct me if im wrong.) hope to see you sunday.

I have been having what sounds like a very similar problem with my Mevster which is based on a 1.6 mk2 (x reg). After far too much head scratching by myself and an auto-electrician or two, it has been picked up by an mx5 specialist here in Kent, who are (hopefully) going to start work on it tomorrow. Once I have more information from them as to what is causing the problem I will post here just in case it is the same thing causing it for you.

Thanks Rusperala, noticed that my fuel lines were back to front. with that sorted it still didn't start. I don't seem to have any voltage at the coils whilst cranking I think it's the brown and brown/yellow wire. had a good day at Stoneleigh yesterday and it was mentioned that it could be the crash switch in the airbag module wire that back in and still nothing.

Check you have power to the coils. I was always told start at the power source and work from there.
Ignition? Main relay? Appropriate fuses? Continuity? Grounds?
Can you swap coil for known good one or test it on known running mx5/Miata/Exocet/Mevster etc?

main relay is definitely clicking over. fuse are good as are the grounds (I think). but the coil signal doesn't seem to be coming from the ecu. (hope that's not knackered.)

Does yours have an obd port? Get a code reader (cheap on eBay). If not Google reading the codes for the mx5. You can do it with an led and a jump lead I believe...
