So, a couple of weeks ago I picked up a 1997 mk1, 1.6 UK spec off EBay for a few hundred pounds... The wings and back arches are good and rusty as are the sills... But surprisingly the sub frames look quite good. I drove it over 100 miles back from the sellers to my house and the engine and box are great... The suspension on the other hand...well that need replacing. Overall for the money I'm chuffed to bits. It's cramped in my single garage but the strip down has started.

Welcome and enjoy, take your time and just label the electrics well. Parts are tough to sell now but if you didnt pay much for the car like me £135 then it's not so much of a problem.

Progress has been a tad slow... Built a car port so I have a bit more space to work on the car and store parts in the garage. Stripping is going well

Strip down continues and has started to become a bit depressing for my wallet ? The list of pats on order are.... Front top arms with ball joints X2 Front bottom ball joints X2 Track rod ends X2 Full poly bush kit Front and rear drop links The shocks look ok but springs could do with being replaced (one has a crack in it) Also the engine needs a bit of work so Cam belt kit with rocker cover and Main crank oil seal have also been ordered. This has hit my budget like a swift kick in the happy sac but no point having the sub frames and arms shot blasted and coated only to put the old bearings back on... Or at least that's what I told my self when ordering the parts.

Thx gwnwar, I'll check that out. So nearly finished the chassis strip down today but I have a drive shaft stuck in a hub :-( iv oiled it and left it to soak over night ready to smack it some more tomorrow. Also the rear top arm bolts were a pig to get out...In fact the whole rear end strip down has been a PITA

Looking good.
I'm having similar issues with one drive shaft that I can't get out, plus a pivot bolt on the wishbone that just won't shift.

r16.. Don't beat on it you will mess the threads and mushroom it. Keep the nut on it loose. TRY a hub pulling tool or a press.

Robin Wiggs.. For hub see above post.. Which control arm bolt is it.. If rear lower outer bolt it is rusted or bent.. Can you turn the bolt head end with a socket and ratchet if so it is not rusted.. You may end up cutting the bolt to get the arm off then press out the pieces.. You won't be the first to have to do that..

^ thanks buddy. I loosened the hub nut but kept it on to protect threads and went at it with a copper mallet... It didn't budge at all. My next door neighbor is bringing his air hammer home from work tonight so will give it another go... This is the final part before all the parts go for shot blasting. New parts have started to turn up in the post now so it's getting exciting ?

I can't shift mine. I've got a three-arm puller on it and a 3foot breaker bar - it just won't budge. It's got so much pressure that the end of the bolt on the puller is digging into the centre of the driveshaft.
Any ideas?

Heat and penetrating oil. I had the best luck with Seafoam deep creep. Expensive but always seemed to work better than others I used.

Thanks. So no issues with heat transfer to the outer cv joint if I heat the hub/splined shaft?
Apologies to hijack your thread r16, but we're having the same issue!

No probs rob :-)
Had another go at it tonight, this time with the air hammer and heat but still no joy. My air compressor only runs to 110psi so my mate is going to take it to his workshop tomorrow and have a go.
If that doesn't work I guess I'll have to find a local garage with a press and hope the hub doesn't brake :-(
