Depowered steering rack, is it necessary?

Pretty much as it says!

I've got a 1999 donor and it has PAS, I can see that PAS is a not required (or possibly desired) on a car so light.

But does it NEED to be removed?

No but it's another thing to go wrong and fit under the bonnet. At the very least I'd remove the pump, drain the fluid from the rack and loop the pipe.
