I was depowering my steering rack this weekend and broke the retainer C clip while removing it. Also took a small (managaeble, I hope) chunk out of the housing that holds the circlip in place. I measured the opening as 1-7/8" - I really need to buy a metric ruler - which I figure equates to either a 38mm or 40mm replacement. I have not been able to find anywhere that confirms either of these sizes.
Does anyone know?

Old money 1-7/8" convert to that new fangled metric stuff is 47.625mm. However circlips are usually specified by the shaft diameter when external and housing bore diameter when internal.

From my email records, I ordered these:
91580A237 Stainless Steel Internal Retaining Ring, for 1-9/16" Bore Diameter, Packs of 1 91580A236 Stainless Steel Internal Retaining Ring, for 1-1/2" Bore Diameter, Packs of 1
I think they both would have worked, But I only tried one and it fit fine.
The one I have measures 1.74" OD on my calipers, so looking at the Mcmaster drawings, it appears this is the 1 9/16" size. Therefore, I think I used the 1-1/2" clip on the car.
I am using an NA rack, BTW. Not sure if the NB is different. Also, this is the circlip on the top of the rack, where the steering column attaches, just to be sure we are talking about the same thing.

Thanks Jon! For some silly reason I've got the wrong measurement - the one I posted earlier - in my head and not been able to remember the right size. The opening is actually 1- 7/16". Good thing I have a picture of my notes... I'll buy my part tonight. Thanks for the help all!

Got a 1 7/16" replacement circlip in the mail as I couldn't find a local place that has any near the size I need. It fits my '92 rack but it seems to be a little on the small side - I barely had to pinch it to get it in and I can rotate it with my fingers although it doesn't seem to fall out without a small pull with pliers. I see a 38mm clip in my future as I don't want to risk any steering problems while driving.
