Placed my order today with Contemporary Automotive the distributor here in the US of A.
Now just looking for a donor cycle.....may have found one just about 120mi north. It has what is called a "salvage title" which means that the insurance company totaled the bike after the accident. That means that repairs were more expensive than the bike was worth. The drive train and engine look great and the damage seems confined to the body work and trim pieces and signals. Now if we can just agree on a price that I can live with.
This will be my first kit. Build over winter and drive in the spring ;D

Got the R1 that had been laid down. Pretty much broke all the plastic on the bike. The engine and driveline is nearly perfect. I got it for a song ;D
Now if the build manual comes I can start collecting other parts for the build.

The price is exactly 4000 Pounds ;D What they do is charge your card with whatever that comes out to in dollars on the day you place the order. The initial charge is for 1000 Pounds as the down payment to start the build of your car with the remainder due before delivery. So it all depends on the current exchange rate. You could lock in the price by paying it all ( the dollar is currently falling in relation to the British Pound) or take a chance that the dollar will gain again in the near future......you makes your choices and takes your chances. At the current exchange rate that comes out to $6384.
The final build price will depend on a lot of factors. Primary will be what you get an R1 engine and swing arm for. Good bikes that are intact and with low mileage go for as much as $6000. A wrecked bike with intact engine and drive line can be as low as $100 but more typically $1000 to $2000 depending on how bent up things are. Up to about year 2004 the engine on the R1 is a stressed part of the frame so if the frame is bent you need to be real careful about the state of the engine. I personally found a bike that had been laid down with only extensively broken plastic and thus felt pretty comfortable about the engine and still got a good price.
Next will be just what you spend on the small stuff. Which does tend to add up in a hurry. You can go cheap on the lights and brakes, wheels and tires etc and probably get out for not much more than $2000. But realistically I'd say another $3000.
Personally I tend to like high end stuff and expect the build to run right around $12,000 to $14,000 when done. Hope that helps.

How much is the shipping cost to get it to the U.S.? (If you don't mind me asking) If I decide to get one I only have about an 1 1/2 drive to get it from the port in Maryland

Does that include the duty, taxes and all the paperwork? Did you use a import broker?

Did you use a import broker? I'm assuming that Contemporary Automotive is taking care of all that......otherwise why bother with a distributer? I believe that there may be more shipping charges from the distributer to here but I'm not sure.
