While you are at it replace the "O" ring seal on the CAS rear of the head.It is making a mess back there.. Mark the location of it to the head before removing as that is how the timing is set.. It will only go in one position has off set drive.. If you are going to reset or advance the timing or adjust the idle remember to jump the TEN and Grd in the dia. box first..

You ran the pipes on the best side - it's a good idea to keep them away from the heat from the exhaust. Most expansion bottles hold a similar volume. Mine is an oblong shape that came off some little people carrier in a scrap yard and it fits nicely at the front right corner of the engine bay - I didn't want it up on the bulkhead. The airbox does not fit nicely - it's much easier to use an aftermarket filter and make a bracket to mount the MAF.

Ok, will try and get that seal replaced! Don't think I will change the timing, seemed to run quite well as it was, plus it would probably never work again if I moved it! Does it need to be a specific o ring? Or can I just use one that fits I have in the workshop?
Ok, I will probably get a aftermarket filter, and have a look at a different expansion bottle, have a few scrap cars on the farm, will take a look! May try and make a stainless one though, would be hard to see the water in it! Though, it its just an expansion bottle, rather than a header tank, surely it's not that critical for there to be much, if any water in there? Or is my theory on that wrong?!

Buy the correct mazda seal only a few pounds. You'll need an expansion tank as when pressure builds up in the rad it releases a little fluid into it, some MX5 guys have done away with it completely but the way I see it Mazda put it there for a reason and it doesn't exactly weigh much. There will be a certain amount of coolant in the tank all the time.

There have been a couple of home made expansion tanks using a bike drinks bottle and a couple of fittings, did a quick search but couldn't find them.

I like to use OEM for this item. Has to be able to live with oil on it.. Lube it before installing.. Mark CAS and head before removing.. Note were tits in CAS drive are located for easier install pulling cam cover helps to.. If you pull cam cover make sure you put sealant at the 6 corners of the cam tower to stop leaks there..

Cheers for that Dave! Will keep that in mind if I try and make one! And thanks for the tips gwnwar, changed it today, was very easy 5 min job, hopefully it will all be ok when I start it up! 2 marks are in line at least!
Haven't got much to update on... Been busy with work/birthdays/rain!
Got a new air filter, though got it off gumtree and it was a little big, they said it was 75mm but the jubilee clip on it says 90 so maybe it was bigger, never actually measured it just guessed, was cheap and it came with a carbon fibre style cover, so thought would give it a go! Trying to get it to fit, at the moment tried just some oh adhesive, see how well it holds, if it holds in the morning! Also ordered some wheel spacers and brake hoses off of thefreak, so hopefully picking them up soonish
Can I ask how long everyone made their fuel tank spacers? I was thinking 70mm is that about right? Or more/less? Also with the wiring, do you keep everything under the dash? Or engine bay? So many different ways! Thanks for any help!

I used 54mm spacers for the tank - mine's an NA 1.6 tank - I don't know if they're different to 1.8s. I could perhaps have got away with a couple of mils less - that's putting the tank the MEV-proposed way round. Good luck - the brackets provided on the chassis tend to leave you low on options for positioning.

Ok, so update time, few pictures, some of the stuff I have over work equipment wise, some of the car and bits and bobs I have done! Which isn't a great deal, but step by step getting bits done! First up guillotine, as you most likely know, cuts metal, ours is 8ft long, so plent big enough for this project! And can cut upto 3-4mm mild steel, great piece of kit, even if it is a tad blunt Next is the bender, same story it bends metal, 8ft long, will bend 3mm mild steel, maybe more, but we never use anything that thick really Ok, so after picking up the air filter, I decided to just get on and fit it, rather than wait, so, as I said before ( I think) it didn't really fit, so bonded it to the MAF sensor, seems pretty secure, though will keep an eye on it, so I had an off cut of 2.5mm ally so made up a little bracket... Looked something like this.. And then bolted it to the engine lifting eye bolt Hopefully more updates soon!
