The inspector from the Alabama Department of Revenue is coming by on Friday morning. Talking to him it seems that he is only interested in the VIN numbers on the engine and transmission. I was out of town but he came by my house when he was in town on Monday and verified the VIN on the tub in the driveway. He said he would let me install the new VIN plate (with him here) once we figured out a good place for it. Hopefully that is all I will need to get it registered. I will find out soon.

Tail lights! I also added a 3' LED strip to the lip on the wing as the 3rd brake light. All of the functions work correctly with the addition of three relays and external power. The wiring needs a bit of clean up and to be secured but its getting close now.

I have a VIN number. The inspector literally only wanted to see the VIN on the engine and transmission. He said that it made his job easy since I had the shell and he could verify all the VIN numbers from the donor. He said NOT to EVER remove the VIN tag on the dash. That is the important one and removing that one gets you in big trouble. Still no closer to figuring out what I need to do to register it. The inspector said in a year and a half he has only looked at 2 other "assembled" vehicles. So now I am off to the DMV to see if they can tell me what to do next. I chose to put the VIN tag and Exomotive chassis plate on the transmission tunnel between the seats like a Myers Manx.

30 minutes on the phone with USAA and the Exocet is insured. Full coverage insurance (agreed upon value of $23,000) will cost $37 more a month than the liability only coverage on the Miata. Not too bad really.

Congrats, a step in the right direction. Good luck at the DMV.

How did you derive your value? Did you figure in labor cost?

I called USAA a few months back about insurance and they told be to get a VIN then they could start the policy, it might be easier than I thought. They quoted me $63/month for $25k value.

Well that was easy... I am not sure what the very nice lady at the DMV did, but, because I had registered the donor before tearing it apart she was able to apply the taxes paid from the donor and do some other minor paperwork to get it registered. $80.15 registration for the year. She made copies of the "paid" invoice from Exomotive and the forms that the VIN inspector gave me and I was done. It is now badly in need of an alignment, unfortunately this is the weather forecast for the next week... Dang.

How did you derive your value? Did you figure in labor cost? I did not put in the labor cost. I just used the cost of the parts for now. I am going to look at the policy when it updates online at midnight. From there I can change it to include cost of labor.

We have some fairly high liability coverage to protect some other assets that could be put in jeopardy if things go bad.

Alignment is done. The storms were staying just north of us so I took a chance. Front needed the toe adjusted and the rear camber was out but other than that it was in spec. I just went with a street alignment but paid for the lifetime alignment plan so anytime I mess with it they will fix it for free. The guys were cool and will set it up to any numbers I give them. All in all, probably one of the most productive days working on the car.
