I have been spending the last couple of days cleaning the engine and bell housing. I am fairly sure that most/all of the oil on the outside of the engine is from the valve cover gasket, but I have it out of the car so it seems like the time to replace as many of the seals and gaskets as possible. I pulled the top of the intake to clean and paint it. It was pretty nasty so into the parts washer it went. A few hours later it looks much better. I ordered all of the gaskets for the intake so I went ahead and pulled the lower intake. It was also nasty and I will clean it up and paint it. My question is about the intake passages in the head. They all look pretty much like this: The valves look pretty good but there is a ton of gunk build up in the passage way. It seems to be clean where the injectors spray so should I try to clean the gunk out or just let it be? I am inclined to let it be and not worry about getting crap into the cylinders.

I pulled the steering rack out yesterday and went ahead and depowered it. It did not look like any of the ones that I found on the web but it came apart relatively easily. I pulled out the shaft and ground through the seal ring on both sides. A couple whacks with a hammer in the above picture and that green chisel in the background below and it split right open. Here are all the parts out of the rack. I think there is some kind of torsion rod in the pinion housing but I have had trouble finding any information on how to disassemble that part.

How did you get it apart? Looks like you left the inner tie rods attached and undid the large end caps?

I took off the drivers side inner tie rod end. I put the big nut on the front in the bench vise and pulled on the housing to get it loose. Once the parts were out of the front I pulled the pinion housing and then loosened the bolt on the passenger side end. The shaft then slid right out.

Impressive cleanup. Just curious. How much junk came out of the EGR feed tube? When I cleaned my intake assembly the EGR tube in the intake was almost completely blocked in mine.

There was a ton of gunk in the EGR passage and I was getting a CEL for excessive EGR flow at idle. I am going to do a EGR delete so I am not too concerned about it.

Well I tore down the front sub-frame today. It was a real pain to get the ball joints loose but a bunch of hammering and it all came free. I then broke down the hubs and pressed out the studs. I had at least one broken stud on every hub, and one wheel only had two lug nuts on it. So now the hubs look like this:

I also painted my valve cover today. It looks a bit washed out but it is a nice dark flat black. It is actually Harley Davidson Texture Black part number 98606BF that I had left over from a bit of touch up on my Sporty. I could not figure out how to get the PVC grommet or the other hose out so I just painted around them.

They just pull out. Albite its really hard to pull them out, they eventually pop out.

Some more progress in the last couple of days. I replaced the shifter bushings and replaced the fluid. The top wave washer/spring thing was broken in half and the boot was so torn up I was able to slide the ring right off. I also was able to remove the PPF frame from the diff housing. What a pain. I also decided that orange body work was a bit too much and that all of the parts would have to be black or clash, so I switched it to RAL 7031 Blue Grey which according to my swatches should be really close to the frame color Prismatic Powders Very Grey. I am thinking I might be able to pull off this color scheme. (not my car unfortunately)

Well I got the rear sub frame apart. Now I need to take these (and a few more) to be powder coated. Should I try to get some of the hunk off or just let the powder coater take care of it? I didn't remember to head the advice of well, everybody, and loosen the rear axle nuts before disassembling the roller skate so I had to resort to this: A 5 foot piece of pipe on my breaker bar and they came loose fairly easily. Now getting the axles out of the hubs is becoming a problem. I have a press and tried this: But I am guessing that this is how greg broke one of the tabs off when he tried it. So I guess tomorrow I am going to have to find an air hammer and round punch or maybe cut the dust shield off and see if I can get some plates under the hub. Air hammer seems like a better bet and hey, new tools!

Leave the nut on loose leave just enough stub to beat on.. a good large hub pulled 2 or 4 leg unit impact gun and BFH to shock it with should work..

Yep that's exactly how I broke the caliper bracket. Spray the front and the back of the axle stub. Remember not all penetrating oils are created equal. Spend the extra couple bucks on the good silicone sprays. The air chisel will push it right out without damaging anything. You'll want it later for pushing out the rear differential mounts.
